Suzanne Frey-Kupper (also Susanne Frey-Kupper ; born July 26, 1958 in Baden AG ) is a Swiss ancient scholar and numismatist who teaches and researches at the University of Warwick .

Frey-Kupper studied Classical Archeology, Prehistory and Early History , Christian Archeology and Art History at the University of Zurich . Already at this time she specialized in ancient numismatics . From 1985 to 1989 she examined the ancient coins found in the canton of Solothurn ; also in 1985 she was a member of the founding committee of the Swiss Working Group for Fund Coins (SAF) as president. She then held various positions at SAF until 2009. She completed her studies in 1987 with a licentiate ; In her licensing thesis she examined the Roman coins found on Monte Iato in Sicily. In order to deepen this topic, it was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation from 1988 to 1990 . From 1990 she worked as a freelancer for the canton archeology department in Solothurn and the local monument preservation department for the region's coin finds.

From 1991 to 1998 Frey-Kupper was a research assistant at the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences , where she headed the Lausanne branch of the newly founded project Inventory of Found Coins in Switzerland and was responsible as editor for the series of the same name. From 1997 she was employed as a project manager and research assistant at the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Bern , and from 1998 she was also responsible for the coins found at Aventicum . In addition, she gave courses in numismatics, for example as part of the restoration training at the École d'arts appliqués in La Chaux-de-Fonds . In 2004/2005 she received renewed funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation as part of the Marie Heim-Vögtlin program, which enabled her to examine the ancient coins found from Monte Iato on a broader basis. With the resultant work, she received her doctorate in Ancient History at the University of Lausanne in 2007 ; the following year the dissertation was awarded the Faculty Prize of the Philosophical Faculty there.

From 2007 to 2011, Suzanne Frey-Kupper was a lecturer at the University of Zurich. In 2011 she was appointed Associate Professor at the University of Warwick , where she was appointed full professor in 2016. In 2014 she was visiting professor for numismatics at the American Numismatic Society in New York City , in 2017 at the University of Padua . In 2016 she received the Global Contribution Award from the University of Warwick for the international impact of her teaching and research. Frey-Kupper has also been the curator of the university's teaching collection since November 2019.

Frey-Kupper's research covers various areas, especially ancient numismatics. The focus is on the one hand on the analysis of found coins in their archaeological context and their method of manufacture, on the other hand the historical evaluation and interpretation of the coin finds, for example for the minting policy, the political structure and the historical development of the Roman Empire . In this context, she was involved in various excavations and has participated in various exhibitions on archaeological and numismatic topics. Since 1995 she has published the series “Investigations on Numismatics and Monetary History”; since 2002 she has been responsible for the region of Sicily as part of the International Numismatic Commission's Survey of Numismatic Research . From 2009 to 2019 she was a member of the board of the Swiss Numismatic Society , where she has also participated in the editing of the Swiss Numismatic Review since then; since 2014 she was a board member of the Royal Numismatic Society . In addition, she is a member and serves on the advisory boards of numerous other learned societies. She has been on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Cultural History of Antiquity at the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2017, and since 2018 as its Vice-President.
