The Monte Iato is located in the northwest of Sicily , near the present-day cities of San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato in the metropolitan city of Palermo, about 30 kilometers southeast of Palermo.
The mountain is surrounded by cliffs on three sides and is only accessible via a slope on the east side.
Because of this strategic location, the high plateau of Monte Iato was the site of a well-fortified city in ancient times and in the Middle Ages , which the Greeks called Iaitas or Ietas (in the Latin form) in ancient times and Iato in the Middle Ages. Since the destruction of the city by Friedrich II in 1246 , the area has remained uninhabited.
The Archaeological Institute and the Archaeological Collection of the University of Zurich have been conducting annual excavation campaigns (each in June) above the villages of San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Iato since 1971, led by Christoph Reusser .
In addition, annual excavation campaigns have been held by the University of Innsbruck since 2011 under the direction of Erich Kistler .
