Institute for the Cultural History of Antiquity

The Institute for Cultural History of Antiquity (IKAnt) is a research facility of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). Together with the Institute for Oriental and European Archeology (OREA) and the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the IKAnt forms the Archeology and Classics (CLAC) cluster. This is Austria's largest non-university research network in the ancient history and archeology is.

tasks and goals

Chronologically, the time span extends from the Archaic to the Byzantine period, geographically the studies are located in the entire Mediterranean area, in the Roman Danube and northwestern provinces as well as in Iran and Central Asia. The research of the two institute departments (Documenta Antiqua and Monumenta Antiqua) focuses on the collection, editing and analytical evaluation of archaeological, epigraphic, literary, numismatic and papyrological sources. Special consideration is given to questions of cultural history, political, religious, social and economic history as well as questions of legal history with a supraregional reach.

The institute is also involved in international long-term projects for the systematic indexing and publication of ancient source material in corpora, catalogs and databases.

The most important goal is the publication of the results obtained, for which numerous series and journals are available depending on the subject. Another major concern is the promotion and training of young scientists through their involvement in ongoing research.

history

The IKAnt emerged in 2000 from the Archeology Research Center, which was created in 1994 through the merger of several OeAW commissions. a. above all the Limes Commission (founded in 1897), the Commission for Practical Archeology (emerged in 1988 from the company Ephesos , which had been under the patronage of the Academy since 1954) and the Commission for the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (founded 1951). Between 1997 and 2000 there was a gradual expansion through the incorporation of the antiquarian department of the Balkans Commission (founded in 1897) and the Commission for the Corpus of Ancient Mosaics of Asia Minor (founded in 1973). The IKAnt was enlarged and expanded in terms of content in 2013 with the assignment of the Commission for Ancient Legal History (founded 1974), the Numismatic Commission (founded 1973) and the Asia Minor Commission (founded 1896).

Friedrich Krinzinger (until 2008) was the head of the Archeology Research Center and the first director of the institute ; Andreas Pülz has headed the IKAnt since 2009.

Researches

The IKAnt is now made up of two departments, with the Documenta Antiqua department and its working groups summarizing all epigraphic, lexicographical, numismatic and papyrological research. In contrast, the Monumenta Antiqua department and its working groups bundle all archaeological and cultural-historical projects carried out at the institute's level. The IKAnt is an archaeological and antiquity center of competence whose research can be based on a source base that includes both documentary and archaeological evidence:

Essentially, a dual research strategy is pursued, which on the one hand includes longer-term editing and corporate ventures and on the other hand, key question-oriented studies. In addition to developing and safeguarding the cultural heritage, the first line of research serves primarily to create and provide the basis for further analytical studies and interpretations. The key question-oriented research of the IKAnt is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary and is largely carried out across departments or working groups. With their usually medium-term duration, they allow a flexibly adaptable research program.
