Classical Studies
The knowledge of the ancient cultures of the ancient Orient , Europe and North Africa is referred to as antiquity or antiquity , antiquitates , antiquités and antiquities .
Initially, the term ancient studies referred primarily to the classical ancient studies . She dealt with the written and material legacies that affected the everyday life of the Greeks and Romans in antiquity . Since the last third of the 17th century, the term antiquity has also been used synonymously for archeology . In the 19th century, the term antiquity was also used for other areas of research into early cultures, such as Germanic antiquity , but also ancient Egyptian antiquity ( Egyptology ). The formerly only treated Greco-Roman antiquity was called Classical Antiquity because of its long supremacy . Since the second half of the 20th century at the latest, the focus has been extended to the cultures of the ancient Orient, the Mediterranean region and Europe from prehistory and early history to the end of antiquity . In addition to the increasing specialization of the disciplines, interdisciplinary and intercultural research is increasingly becoming the focus of research.
