Tehmina Durrani (born February 18, 1953 in Lahore , Pakistan ) is a Pakistani author. She became known through her autobiographical novel My Feudal Lord (1990, German: Mein Herr und Gebieter , 1994), in which she describes her traumatic experiences with her husband Mustafa Khar and denounces a feudal, male-dominated value system. Durrani belongs to the Durrani .

Childhood and youth, first marriage

Tehmina Durrani grew up in a wealthy family belonging to the Pakistani upper class. Her father Shakirulla Durrani was the head of the state bank. Her mother Samina demanded obedience from her and at the age of twelve assigned her the job of a chambermaid, who had to make sure that her luxurious wardrobe was always kept in order.

The marriage with her first husband Annees Khan took place in 1971 after her mother had given up her initial resistance due to his opinion that she was in a low social position. In 1973 the daughter Tanya was born. In 1975 the divorce took place.

Marriage to Mustafa Khar (1976-1989)

An ever more difficult to hide affair between Durrani and Khar already existed while she was still married. On July 25, 1976, they were secretly married in his hometown of Kot Addu. It was the second marriage for her and the sixth for him. Both have four children together: Naseeba (* 1977), Nisha (* 1979), Ali (* 1981) and Hamza (* 1985/86).

In her book she later described that his behavior towards her had completely changed in marriage. He lied to her, was morbidly jealous and at the same time had secret affairs with other women, especially her younger sister. Not only did he demand absolute submission, but he also severely physically abused her.

Text example from her book:

“Mustafa got up from his chair and hit me hard - two hours after I gave birth to his child. As if carried out by a machine, his blows rattled left and right in time in my face. Then he remembered his favorite torture and twisted my forearm until I thought it would break to pieces. I bit my lip hard to keep from screaming out loud. "

Tehmina Durrani made great efforts to hide her husband's violence from the public, and especially from her own family, for many years in order to maintain the appearance of a happy marriage at all costs. Only after years of agony and an unsuccessful suicide attempt did she begin to fight back physically and finally to part with him. Thereupon Khar kidnapped their children from Europe and hid them in Pakistan, although he himself was not allowed to enter this country at the time and it was clear to all those involved how much the children suffered. As a result, he managed to bind Durrani to himself one last time.

The final separation came when her husband resumed the affair with her younger sister. In the divorce, she not only lost all financial support, but also custody of her children and was rejected by her parents. However, she later managed to regain custody of her children.

Mustafa Khar is the uncle of the former Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar (2011–2013).

Book publications, further life

Her book My Feudal Lord was published in Pakistan in 1990. The author herself writes:

“The first reviews were extremely negative. [...] Some called it obscene and pornographic. [...] My father informed the press in writing that he had cast me out and disinherited me. […] Gradually, the negative press response faded into the background and my report was received more and more in the sense that I had intended: as an insight into the socio-political disorder in our society. I was still considered an outsider, but was accepted again. "

The book was published internationally in 1994 and has since been translated into 36 languages. Co-authors are William Hoffer and Marilyn Hoffer.

Her second book, A Mirror to the Blind (1996), is a biography of Abdul Sattar Edhi , the founder and director of the largest Pakistani charity.

Her third book, Blasphemy (1998), is about the sadistic sexual practices of a Muslim clergyman. The author said:

“My book is not directed against Islam, but against the Muslim mafia. I want to show that it is not medieval madness, but a tolerant religion. "

Durrani married Shahbaz Sharif , who became Prime Minister of Punjab in 2008 , in 2003 and lives with him in Lahore. Shahbaz Sharif is the brother of Nawaz Sharif .

Since 2005 she has been working in a non-governmental organization that supports the social reintegration of abused women. Her work for Fakhra Yunas, who fell victim to an acid attack by her then husband in 2001 and committed suicide in March 2012, became particularly well known. The perpetrator Bilal Khar is a son of Mustafa Khar.
