Hina Rabbani Khar

Hina Rabbani Khar comes from the Kharral tribe. Her father Ghulam Noor Rabbani Khar owns large estates in the Punjab province. Her grandfather Mohammed Yar Khar and her great-grandfather Malik Gulam were wealthy landowners. She is the niece of the politician Mustafa Khar , of whom his ex-wife Tehmina Durrani painted an unflattering picture as a feudal lord in her book Mein Herr und Gebieter , published internationally in 1994 .

She studied at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) until 1998. She received her master's degree in management from the University of Massachusetts in 2001 . She is married to Feroze Gulzar, the son of an industrialist whom she met as a college friend at LUMS. The couple has two daughters.

Career

Khar started her political career under Pervez Musharraf . When her father was no longer allowed to run for the National Assembly in 2002 because he lacked the required school leaving certificate after a change in the law, she successfully ran for his old seat. She became a member of the National Assembly and State Secretary in the Ministry of Economics and Statistics for the PML-Q .

In 2008, Khar was elected to parliament for the opposition PPP . The PPP won the elections and it retained its position as State Secretary under the new President Asif Ali Zardari . After the resignation of Shah Mahmud Qureshi , she was appointed Acting Foreign Minister with the rank of State Secretary in February 2011. She was officially appointed Foreign Minister on July 19, 2011 and sworn in on July 20.

With the appointment of Khar, Zardari wanted to send "a positive signal for Pakistan's soft image". He succeeded, although German press reports assumed that important foreign policy decisions in Pakistan would continue to be made by the military.
