Evelyn Weiss , later Weiss-Ott (* 1938 in Rome ; † November 12, 2007 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg ) was a German art historian .

Life

The daughter of a Hungarian mother and an English father studied art history in Bonn and Vienna. In 1964 she was with the dissertation The cycle of frescoes of St. John's Chapel in Pürgg in Bonn to Dr. phil. PhD . For many years she was confidante of the art patron couple Peter and Irene Ludwig and thus significantly involved in building up their internationally important Pop Art collection as well as in the collection of Russian avant-garde, which is unique outside of Russia . At Documenta 6 in 1977 she was - together with Klaus Honnef - curator of the painting and photography departments . With their look back on 150 years of photo history, they directed interest to the artistic creative power of the medium. From 1983 to 2003 she was the deputy director of the Ludwig Museum and thus largely responsible for its structure and design.

Evelyn Weiss was, among other things, on the board of the German National Committee of the International Council of Museums and for a long time Vice President of the international art critic association . In addition, she was repeatedly commissioner of the São Paulo Biennale and helped numerous artists such as Klaus Rinke , Sigmar Polke , Hanne Darboven and Georg Baselitz to gain international recognition.

Evelyn Weiss also dealt with museum education and was particularly involved in mediation work in the target groups of educational backgrounds. Through her husband, the Bonn surgeon Gerhard Ott , she was particularly familiar with the subject of "healing through art" and supported approaches for special educational projects and other communication strategies.

She also contributed to the television series 1000 Masterpieces : She contributed to paintings by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Edvard Munch , Wolf Vostell , Andy Warhol . These texts were also printed in the books accompanying the series, are sporadically repeated on 3sat , ZDFkultur and Planet and are now available on DVD publications (see 1000 Masterworks # Literature ).
