Gerhard Heinrich Ott (born December 11, 1929 in Neu-Württemberg , Rio Grande do Sul ; † May 31, 2001 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg ) was a German surgeon and professor .

Life

After graduating from the Zeppelin-Gymnasium in Stuttgart, Ott studied medicine at the universities of Tübingen , Hamburg , Freiburg and Heidelberg . In Tübingen he became a member of the Landsmannschaft Scotland and in Heidelberg he joined the Landsmannschaft Teutonia . In 1956 he was with the dissertation The symptoms of gastric ulcer duodenal et at lack of hydrochloric acid to Dr. med. PhD. After his time as a medical assistant, he received his surgical training under Karl Heinrich Bauer and Fritz Linder at the Heidelberg University Surgical Clinic. After extensive training in general, trauma and abdominal surgery as well as urology , he received the specialist certification for surgery in 1964.

In 1968 he received his habilitation for surgery at the University of Heidelberg due to his habilitation thesis on skin prostheses and foreign body sarcomas and an inaugural lecture on breast cancer through the ages . Here he also received an associate's post in 1973 . Under the influence of KH Bauer in Heidelberg, Ott devoted himself to clinical-oncological problems, medical documentation and the problems of the emergency rescue service. His scientific activity was characterized by a large number of relevant publications, articles in and sole edition of textbooks.

From 1970 to 1994 Gerhard Ott was chief physician in the surgical department of the newly built Evangelical Hospital in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. Where he was able to contribute his experience from the operative tumor treatment as a member of the board of trustees of the German Cancer Aid . When he took up this position as chief physician, he also devoted himself to the topic of healing effects of art with great commitment . The motivation for this was based on the intention to use the emotional impact of art as an open offer to patients, visitors and employees. He placed contemporary works of art in hospital rooms, corridors and waiting rooms. According to Ott, these served to give deep emotional feelings a clearer form. He found that the patients often have a reduced stimulus threshold for light, sound, colors and movement. As a result, they are particularly sensitized and receptive to the statements made by art. This work was supported by his wife, the art historian Evelyn Weiss and since 1986 by the art historian Marion Diwo for many years.

After his retirement, Ott devoted a lot of time to Ayurveda medicine, intensified by numerous trips to India. In addition to his work as a mentor and patron of an Indian hospital, he worked for CARE Germany in the Humanitarian Campaign for Rwanda in the refugee camps around Goma .
