Fritz Linder (born January 3, 1912 in Breslau ; † September 10, 1994 in Heidelberg ) was a German surgeon and university professor.

Life

As the son of the school principal Konrad Linder , Fritz Linder attended Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium . After high school he studied 1930-1935 medicine at the Albert-Ludwigs-University , the University of Bristol and the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Breslau . During his studies he became a member of the Freiburg Association of German Students . He was an avid athlete and stood out with his achievements at the English student championships in Wembley .

1936 in Breslau for Dr. med. after receiving his doctorate , he began his surgical training there in 1938 with Karl Heinrich Bauer . As a surgeon at a field hospital on the Eastern Front , Linder was seriously wounded. He was dismissed as a medical officer in the Air Force (Wehrmacht) . After the Second World War he followed his teacher Bauer to Heidelberg . In 1951 he was appointed to the newly established chair for surgery at the Free University of Berlin . 1958/59 he was chairman of the Berlin Surgical Society . Linder made a significant contribution to the fact that the Free University, founded in West Berlin in 1948, had its own medical faculty . He made the city hospital in Berlin-Westend the nucleus of the West Berlin university clinics. Through close contact with Anglo-American medicine, he was able to set up an operative heart and vascular center here, which had a heart-lung machine as early as 1958 .

From 1962 to 1981 Linder worked as full professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and as director of the surgical clinic at the Heidelberg University Hospital . Born in the Palatinate , he mastered the Palatinate idiom - which earned him affection and trust from local patients. For many years he headed the Heidelberg / Mannheim Tumor Center . In cardiac surgery , he worked closely with the Heart Center in Los Angeles under the direction of William Polk Longmire Jr. In 1979 he took over the office of President of the German Cancer Society . Linder has been a visiting professor in the United States and England . Retired in 1981 , he only retired when the long-term effects of his war injury forced him to do so. He wrote over 270 publications .
