Siegfried Weller

Siegfried Weller (born July 28, 1928 in Welzheim ; † August 27, 2019 in Tübingen ) was a German trauma surgeon . Until his retirement in 1996, he was medical director of the professional association accident clinic in Tübingen . He has written numerous publications and standard textbooks in trauma surgery.

Life

Weller studied medicine at the Universities of Würzburg , Innsbruck and Heidelberg . In 1953 he received his doctorate . From 1954 to 1956 he worked in New York City and continued his education at the Freiburg University Medical Center. In Freiburg , Weller completed his habilitation under Hermann Krauss in 1962 with a thesis on the morphology and function of articular cartilage under normal and pathological conditions. In 1966, Weller became head of the trauma surgery department at the Freiburg University Medical Center, the first institution of its kind in Germany. From 1969 to 1996 he was medical director of the professional association accident clinic in Tübingen . The institute's research institute, which opened in 2012, was named after Weller. Kuno Weise was his successor at the clinic .

He was married and the father of two daughters.

Act

Weller was one of the founding members of the German section of the Working Group on Osteosynthesis Issues (AO Foundation) in 1970 and was its president until 1991. From 1994 to 1996 he was President of the AO Foundation. He was also President of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) in 1978 and President of the German Society for Surgery (DGCH) in 1982 . He was (co-) founder of the journals Current Traumatology and OP-Journal .

The "Weller database, Weller table" was created under the direction of Weller. This table contains practically all common injury patterns, structured according to the so-called "Weller key". For each Weller key, prognostic assessments of the healing process are given (treatment methods, physiotherapy, healing process, risk of complications, downtime, etc.).

Honors

Siegfried Weller was awarded the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1988 . In 1989 he received the Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach bust from the German Society for Trauma Surgery. He was awarded honorary doctorates from the Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Madras . On Weller's 60th birthday , a surgical symposium was held in Constance together with Ernst Kern's 65th and Jörg Rehn's 70th birthday.
