Nicolai Guleke
Nicolai Guleke (born April 25, 1878 in Pernau , Livonia Gouvernement , † April 4, 1958 in Wiesbaden ) was a German-Baltic surgeon and university professor.
Life
Born the son of the German-Baltic engineer and architect Reinhold Guleke , Nicolai Guleke studied medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin , the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Kaiser Wilhelms-Universität Strasbourg . His life as a surgeon was shaped by his first teacher, Ernst von Bergmann . During the First World War , Guleke worked as a senior physician in a fortress hospital in Strasbourg . In 1918 he became the chair of surgery at the Philipps University of Marburg , but in 1919 he moved to the University of Jena , where he worked as director of the surgical university clinic. From 1926 to 1951 he lived with his family in his Jenenser house "Belle Epoque". During the Second World War , Guleke was chief physician in the reserve and consultant surgeon in the 1st Army (Wehrmacht) and hospitals in Thuringia . After finishing his professional activity in Jena at the age of 73 he moved to Wiesbaden. He died there in 1958 and was buried in Tutzing on Lake Starnberg .
Guleke was recognized as an outstanding surgeon in neurosurgery , hand surgery and visceral surgery . He wrote 13 books, including articles in the handbook of the entire therapy and 1945 the work War Surgery and War Surgeons through the ages . Since it was founded by Springer-Verlag, Guleke has worked on the advisory board of the magazine Der Chirurg . He also wrote many individual publications . A particular concern of Guleke was the training of the next generation of surgeons . In 1946 he suggested, through the dean of the medical faculty, that the Soviet military administration approve the re-establishment of a society for surgery in Thuringia. This was first achieved for Jena in 1947.
One of Guleke's students, B. Boshammer , wrote after the death of his teacher: “For Guleke, surgery meant life. He was obsessed with it. ”Another student, Gerhard Hartmann , added:“ But surgery was only there for him to help the patient in his need. ”
