Hans-Wilhelm Schreiber (born September 17, 1924 in Schönecken in the Eifel ; † April 22, 2004 in Hamburg ) was a German visceral surgeon and professor at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.

Life

Schreiber was the son of a country doctor and, after being seriously wounded by shrapnel, decided to become a surgeon as a soldier on the Eastern Front in World War II in 1943. He studied medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1962 under Alfred Gütgemann . As a qualified lecturer , he became a senior physician at the clinic.

In 1965 he became chief physician at the Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg . In 1967 he became a professor . In 1970, he turned down calls to the University of Essen and the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . In 1973 he became full professor for general surgery at the University of Hamburg . As director , he was in charge of general surgery at UKE until his retirement in 1990. From 1976 to 1978 he was deputy medical director of the UKE and deputy spokesman for the medical department.

Schreiber dealt in particular with abdominal and gastric surgery, where he introduced a new surgical method in gastric resection with the formation of a replacement stomach from parts of the jejunum , and vascular surgery, such as pathophysiology and surgery of hypertension of the portal vein. He carried out the first liver transplant in Hamburg in 1984 and promoted the introduction of endoscopic surgery in the late 1960s. He also dealt with medical ethics, among other things in a working group he founded consisting of doctors and lawyers in Hamburg. He and his colleagues wrote a ten-volume textbook on surgery.
