Amie Wilkinson

Anne Marie "Amie" Wilkinson (born April 4, 1968 in Boston ) is an American mathematician .

Amie Wilkinson was born to lawyer Ruth E. VanDemark and computer scientist Leland Wilkinson and grew up in Evanston , Illinois . She studied at Harvard University , where she graduated in June 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics. In May 1995 she was working Stable Ergodicity of the Time-One Map of a Geodesic flow at the University of California, Berkeley for Ph.D. PhD . Her PhD supervisor was Charles C. Pugh . From 1995 to 1996 she was a Benjamin Peirce Instructor at Harvard University. She then moved to Northwestern University , where she Boas Assistant Professor (1996–1999), Assistant Professor (1999–2002), Associate Professor (2002–2005) and finally in 2005 became a professor. She is a math professor at the University of Chicago . She was a visiting professor at the University of Burgundy (2002 and 2003). She was also a visiting researcher at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (1993, 1996 and 1998). She is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society , which awarded her the 2020 Levi L. Conant Prize , and has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2019 .

Wilkinson deals with ergodic theory and smooth dynamic systems , with the geometry and regularity of leaves and with the effects of discrete groups on manifolds . In 2011 she received the Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize in Mathematics from the American Mathematical Society “for her remarkable contributions to the ergodic theory of partially hyperbolic dynamic systems”. The work by Keith Burns and Amie Wilkinson on the stability of partially hyperbolic systems was particularly recognized. In a number of publications she dealt with centralizers of C 1 - diffeomorphisms and thus solved No. 12 of Stephen Smale's list of unsolved mathematical problems for the case of C 1 -diffeomorphisms. Recently she and Artur Ávila and Sylvain Crovisier have shown that generic volume-preserving diffeomorphisms with positive metric entropy form an ergodic- dynamic system.

Wilkinson has been married to mathematician Benson Farb since 1996 and has two children.
