Benson Stanley Farb (born October 25, 1967 in Norristown , Pennsylvania ) is an American mathematician who studies geometric group theory, algebra and low-dimensional topology.

He graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree and received his doctorate in 1994 from William Thurston at Princeton University ( Relatively hyperbolic and automatic groups with applications to negatively curved manifolds ). Farb is a professor at the University of Chicago .

From 1999 to 2004 he was the managing editor of Geometriae dedicata .

From 1999 to 2001 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2014 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul (Representation Stability).

He has been married to mathematician Amie Wilkinson since 1996 .
