Christian Herfarth (born August 12, 1933 in Breslau ; † September 2, 2014 in Heidelberg ) was a German surgeon and university professor.

Life

Herfarth was the son of the doctor Heinrich Herfarth. His grandfather was also a doctor. From 1952 to 1957 he studied medicine at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , the University of Vienna , the University of Hamburg and the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg . Since 1952 a member of the Corps Franconia Tübingen , in 1953 he was chairman of the general student committee of the Tübingen Senior Citizens' Convention . In 1955 he moved to the University of Hamburg and was also active in the Corps Thuringia Jena , which was then located there . In 1957 he was licensed as a doctor in Heidelberg . With a doctoral thesis with the pathologist Edmund Randerath he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD .  

Herfarth received his specialist training at the Surgical University Clinic in Marburg with Max Schwaiger , where he completed his habilitation in 1966 . In 1966 he became a senior physician . In 1968 he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , where he became senior physician in 1970 and associate professor in 1972 . In 1973 he followed the reputation of the University of Ulm on the Department of Surgery. As Germany's youngest surgery professor, he headed the clinic for general surgery. On October 1, 1981, he switched to the Heidelberg chair. From 1982 he headed the Tumor Center Heidelberg / Mannheim . From 1989 to 1991 Herfarth was Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine I at Heidelberg University. His focus was on oncology , transplantation and inflammatory bowel diseases ( Crohn's disease , ulcerative colitis ). 2001 emeritus , he was awarded the 2003 Johann Georg Zimmermann Medal awarded. He died at the age of 81 and was buried in the Neuenheim cemetery on September 8, 2014 .
