Hermann Kümmell (born May 22, 1852 in Korbach , Waldeck , † February 19, 1937 in Hamburg ) was a German surgeon and urologist.

Life

Hermann Kümmell was the son of a pharmacist. After graduating from the Alte Landesschule Korbach in 1872 , Hermann Kümmell studied medicine at the Philipps University in Marburg , the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg , the Kaiser Wilhelms University in Strasbourg and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . He became a member of the Corps Hasso-Nassovia (1873) and the Corps Nassovia Würzburg (1874). On May 12, 1875, he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . After completing his studies, he became an assistant doctor to Max Schede at the municipal hospital in Friedrichshain in Berlin. He worked in the internal and surgical departments. In 1880 he followed Schede to Hamburg at the Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg . In 1881 he was accepted into the Academic Club in Hamburg . Since 1883 head physician in the surgical department, he followed Schede in 1895 as senior physician (= head) at the New General Hospital Eppendorf . In 1907 Kümmell received the title of professor . In 1919 he took up the chair for surgery at the newly founded University of Hamburg and was elected rector in 1921 . Between 1909 and 1926 he headed the 1st, 7th, 15th, 17th, 23rd and 26th meetings of the Association of Northwest German Surgeons . In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler . Kümmell was buried on the grave of his family in the Ohlsdorf cemetery , grid square S 8.

Kümmell recognized the importance of antisepsis for surgery and introduced it to operations. He distinguished the terms antisepsis and asepsis . In special surgery he dealt with intestinal obstruction , bladder cancer and tuberculosis of the peritoneum . His research contributions on neurosurgery , prostate enlargement and the gallbladder are also noteworthy . In 1886 he opened the common bile duct for the first time . He was one of the first to use the surgeon to use X-rays .

His son Hermann Adolph Kümmell (1890–1969) was a surgeon in Kiel.
