Jürgen Lüthje
Jürgen Lüthje (born September 30, 1941 in Dievenow ) is a German lawyer and former President of the University of Hamburg .
Life
The son of a prison officer grew up in Schleswig-Holstein and later in Remscheid . After graduating from the Röntgen High School there, Lüthje studied law at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Bonn. According to the legal state examinations in Cologne (1967) and Dusseldorf (1973), he was at the University of Bremen Dr. jur. PhD. Further stations:
- 1968–1973 research assistant at the University of Bochum, 1972 legal advisor at the university
- Legal advisor to the Federal Assistant Conference , constitutional reports on co-determination and the numerus clausus at universities
- 1973–1991 Chancellor of the newly founded University of Oldenburg
- 1991–2006 President of the University of Hamburg as successor to Peter Fischer-Appelt ; Re-elected in 1996 and 2004
As president, he intensified the university's cooperation with business associations and cultural and scientific institutions in the city. In 1996 he had the university appraised by an external advisory commission in Germany for the first time and then developed the “University Development Project” as part of a program funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, which comprehensively reformed the self-governing and administrative structure of the University of Hamburg and strengthened the departments. During his tenure, the number of Collaborative Research Centers rose from three to seven and that of the Graduate Schools from six to twelve, while at the same time the university's budget was cut by three percent annually from 1995 and the university was forced to cut every second vacancy.
After reaching the age limit, Lüthje left his position on September 30, 2006; the physicist Monika Auweter-Kurtz was appointed his successor .
Lüthje is a member of the Education and Science Union and the SPD .
