Peter Fischer-Appelt (born October 28, 1932 in Berlin ) is a German Protestant theologian. He was co-founder and founding chairman of the Federal Assistant Conference (1968–1970) and longstanding President of the University of Hamburg (1970–1991).

Life

The son of a businessman grew up in Berlin (until 1944) and in Aalen , Württemberg , where he passed his Abitur in 1951. He then completed a commercial apprenticeship and studied Protestant theology and philosophy in Tübingen , Heidelberg and Bonn from 1953 to 1959 . Research assistant in Bonn since 1961 , Fischer-Appelt was involved in university self-administration and in various assistant representations. He gained nationwide fame as a co-founder and first chairman of the Federal Assistant Conference (BAK), which presented its own university reform proposals at the height of the student movement.

The election of Fischer-Appelt as the first President of the University of Hamburg at the end of 1969 caused a sensation when he prevailed against Wilhelm Röhl and several professor candidates in the fifth ballot with the votes of the assistants and students . In the following years, however, he successfully profiled himself as a “man of balance” and was confirmed in office several times. In 1990 he turned down the candidacy for a fourth term; his former BAK colleague Jürgen Lüthje (until 2006) was elected as his successor .

During his tenure in Hamburg, Fischer-Appelt established numerous scientific collaborations with Eastern European universities, including 1974 with the State University of Saint Petersburg and 1980 with Charles University in Prague . After his departure, he supported the democratic higher education reform in Eastern Europe on behalf of the Council of Europe. He has received several awards for his work, including from Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland and Hungary and the Council of Europe.

Since 1953 he has been a member of the student association Akademische Gesellschaft Stuttgardia Tübingen .
