history

New building house 1, Catholic Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg

The Marienkrankenhaus was founded in 1864 by sisters of the order of St. Charles Borromeo in the Lange Reihe. It is the second oldest hospital in Hamburg. In March 1882 the hospital moved into the building erected by Martin Haller at its current location in Alfredstrasse in Hamburg-Hohenfelde. The sculpture of Maria above the main entrance was created by Ludwig Kunstmann .

After several new buildings in 1911, with 800 beds, the hospital is the largest private hospital in Hamburg. In 1913 its own nursing school was founded.

The Marienkrankenhaus was constantly being expanded with new buildings and extensions. Since 2000, new rooms for neonatology and the center for preventive medicine have been put into operation. In 2007 the interdisciplinary emergency and operations center was inaugurated. In 2010, the new intensive unit was opened in this wing of the building. The new central operating room with a total of 9 operating theaters was inaugurated in 2016.
