The Wilhelmstift offers around 12,000 inpatients and around 50,000 outpatients per year top-quality medicine, which is recognized far beyond the borders of northern Germany. Among other beds for severely burned children injured as well as a level 1 perinatal center with neonatal held (= intensive care unit for premature infants and newborns).

history

In 1925 the Hamburg Catholic Association for Women, Girls and Children founded a refuge as a care home for fallen girls in Hamburg. Due to numerous difficulties in maintaining the home, the association transferred ownership of the property to the Diocese of Osnabrück , where the incumbent Bishop Hermann Wilhelm Berning personally supported the interests of the home. After this, the name was later given as Wilhelmsstift. In 1927 the facility was expanded to include an infant home, which was inaugurated in 1928. In 1930 maternity rooms were set up to enable births directly in the nursing home. From 1936 on, sick children were also cared for in the home.

During the Second World War in 1943 they were forced to leave the building. It reopened in 1945. Due to severe supply shortages in the treatment of seriously ill children in Hamburg, the nursing home was expanded in 1947 to include 36 hospital beds for children.

Due to the increasing lack of space, a new building was built in 1955, which was inaugurated in 1956. In 1975, plans to remove the hospital from the hospital requirement plan were averted by a citizens' initiative. In 1982 the Walddörfer Children's Hospital was taken over. In 1992 the two houses were merged.

In 1995 the sponsorship was transferred to the newly established Archbishop's Chair in Hamburg. The day clinic of the Wilhelmstift children's hospital opened its doors in 1997 with 15 places. As of 2004, one of the first aftercare centers in northern Germany for children born prematurely or sick children was operated by the See You Foundation on the grounds of the Wilhelmstift Children's Hospital. In 2007, the so-called Children's Medical Care Center at Wilhelmstift, or MVZ for short, started work, and in 2011 the house opened another psychiatric day clinic in Hamburg-Langenhorn. In 2018, the MVZ building on the site of the Wilhelmstift was demolished to make way for a new child and adolescent psychiatry. On January 30, 2020, Health Senator Cornelia Prüfer-Stork laid the foundation stone for this new building together with the chief physician of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy as well as the cathedral chapter. The three-storey new building with over 60 single and double rooms is funded by the authority for health and consumer protection with a total of 28.9 million euros.

Departments

In addition, a level 1 perinatal center is being looked after by pediatricians as part of a cooperation in the Marienkrankenhaus Hamburg .
