Eugen Enderlen (born January 21, 1863 in Lehen (Salzburg) ; † June 7, 1940 in Stuttgart ) was a German surgeon and university professor in Greifswald, Basel, Würzburg and Heidelberg.

Life

Enderlen was the son of Swabian parents. He studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University and became a member of the Munich Academic Choir . In 1888 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . In 1895 he completed his habilitation at the University of Greifswald . Due to his publications, he did not need to submit a habilitation thesis . In 1899 he became an associate professor .

In 1904 he accepted the call of the University of Basel , but in 1908 he moved to the University Hospital of Würzburg . There he published clinical and animal studies on vascular and organ transplantation, blood transfusion , ileus and appendicitis . During the First World War , Enderlen was a general practitioner and, based on clinical studies, advocated emergency laparotomy for all abdominal shots. In 1918 he became a full professor in Heidelberg , where he was also responsible for running the dental clinic until January 31, 1919 and from the end of May to the end of September 1920. At the age of 69, Enderlen gave up the Heidelberg chair in 1932 and moved to Stuttgart (with a heart condition). He died there in 1940 during palliative surgery when colon cancer had led to an intestinal obstruction . Enderlen was a teacher and friend of Erich von Redwitz .

Enderlen brought the transplantation of vessels and cadaver bones to clinical application. He developed rules for the indication of surgery in ulcer and gallstone disease , which are still important today. He also performed pioneering denervation operations on the heart and blockages of the stellate ganglion with the Heidelberg internist Ludolf von Krehl .
