Erwin Payr

Erwin Payr (born February 17, 1871 in Innsbruck , † April 6, 1946 in Leipzig ) was an Austrian surgeon and university professor.

Life

Erwin Payr was the son of Karl Payr (1836–1907), a civil servant at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Professor of State Accounting at Leipzig University, and Anna Sauter, who came from a family of writers and botanists. He married Helene Steiner (1876–1952) in 1901. The couple had the son Bernhard Payr (1903-1945) and a daughter Anna Maria Payr (1902-1979).

Career

After graduating from the Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck , Payr studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck . The anatomist Wilhelm Roux and the surgeon Carl Nicoladoni had a lasting impact on him . At the University of Vienna he heard the famous surgeons Theodor Billroth and Anton von Eiselsberg . In 1894 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. He then worked in Vienna, first in pathology and internal medicine, then with the surgeon Eduard Albert . He then went to Nicoladoni in Graz , where he completed his habilitation in surgery in 1899.

Until 1906 Payr worked as a primary physician at the Graz City Hospital in the surgical-gynecological department as well as experimental-surgical. In 1907 he followed Paul Leopold Friedrich to the surgical chair at the Royal University of Greifswald . Three years later he moved to the Albertus University in Königsberg . He was the successor to Erich Lexer , who remained his rival in the field of plastic surgery throughout his life. In 1911 he was appointed to the University of Leipzig . In 1929 he was president of the German Society for Surgery . In 1937 he retired .

In general surgery, Payr dealt with techniques for suturing blood vessels and nerves, the therapy of wounds, gunshot wounds and amputations . The orthopedically oriented pathology and surgery of joint diseases was another focus of his work. In addition, he worked in the fields of gastric surgery ( gastric and duodenal ulcers), skull and brain surgery, organ transplantation , trigeminal neuralgia , thyroid surgery, abdominal surgery ( peritoneal adhesions , constipation , appendicitis , liver , biliary tract , pancreas ) and the therapy of malignant tumors and the treatment of malignant tumors of the genitourinary tract .

Payr developed numerous surgical instruments (intestinal clamps, abdominal wall hooks, grooved probes, squeezing forceps, needles), various plastic surgical procedures ( arthroplasty , sickle incision) and described diagnostic signs such as the various Payr signs. His main work is his monograph on joint stiffness and joint plastic. An access to the inner meniscus of the knee joint is named after Payr.

He published more than 320 journal articles and 30 conference articles as well as articles on the most important surgical and therapeutic standard textbooks of his time, was co-editor of the results of surgery and orthopedics , received titles and awards at home and abroad. With his enormous work performance in all areas of surgery, Payr is one of the greatest masters in his field. He was particularly interested in founding his own school of surgeons. It includes Ernst Heller , Martin Kirschner , Paul Frangenheim , Arthur Läwen , Otto Kleinschmidt , Endre Hedri , Fritz Hesse , Heinrich Kuntzen , Josef Hohlbaum , Antoni Jurasz , Herbert Junghanns , Arthur Ladwig , Herbert Uebermuth , Willy Baensch (the first radiology professor in Leipzig) and the senior physician Ida Boysen .
