Karl Unger

Karl Unger (* 1782 in Lissa , Kingdom of Saxony ; † March 28, 1835 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Was a German-Jewish doctor and the first professor of surgery at the Albertus University of Königsberg .

Life

Born into a poor Jewish family, Unger studied medicine under poor conditions in Leipzig and Halle . After receiving his doctorate in philosophy and medicine in Halle , he worked as an assistant to Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland in Berlin. In 1813/14 he took part in the Wars of Liberation as senior physician in the Prussian Army , in which he was awarded the Iron Cross . In 1815 he followed the Albertina's call to the new chair for surgery. Unger set up a surgical - ophthalmological clinic, which he ran in an exemplary manner with the mental health clinic . As the only university lecturer in Königsberg , he waived the (mandatory) lecture fees. For his work in the fight against the cholera epidemic , he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class.

In the winter semester of 1823/24 and in the winter semester of 1833/34 he was prorector of the Albertus University.

He died of the long-term effects of an infection that he contracted during an autopsy . The 2nd volume of his "Contributions to the Clinic for Surgery" remained unfinished. He dedicated the first volume to his teacher Hufeland.
