Endre Hedri (around 1950)

Endre Hedri (born September 19, 1893 in Gradiška , † November 11, 1962 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian surgeon and university professor. In his country he founded trauma surgery.

Life

Hedri's professional life was shaped by his parents. His father was a country doctor. In his early youth he decided, following his father, to put his skills and work in the service of sick people.

At the university he was considered a serious and dedicated student. During his studies, he was also working at the Pathological Institute ( Kórbonctani Intézet ) at Semmelweis University. He was also an active member of the Galilei Circle ( Galilei Kör ), a free-thinking left-wing movement in what was then Hungary.

After his training, the young doctor got a job in the surgery department of the Rókus Hospital ( Rókus Kórház ) as Manó Herczel's assistant. In order to expand his surgical knowledge, he sought contact in the 1920s with Anton von Eiselsberg , Ferdinand Sauerbruch and Erwin Payr at the University of Leipzig in order to learn from them. He also went to Szeged to work at the Surgical Clinic at Kamilló Vidákovits.

This was followed by a job as a surgeon at the hospital on Uzsoki Street ( Uzsoki utcai Kórház ). There he came into intensive contact with the poorer classes of Budapest, which made a lasting impression on him. In 1943, he switched to the Anna Koltói Accident Hospital ( Koltói Anna Baleseti Kórház ), and he played a key role in establishing it.

After the war he was appointed professor of surgery at the university in 1947. In October 1949 he took over the directorate of the I. Surgical Clinic at Semmelweis University . Under his leadership, modern departments for thoracic surgery and trauma surgery were set up in the clinic . He was also innovative in surgery of the colon and pancreas . He died in office at the age of 69.

His grave is in the Farkasrét Cemetery ( Farkasréti temető ) in Budapest.

Teaching

Hedri was not only a successful practicing physician, but also a notable and respected university professor who wrote textbooks for medical students and also served as an editor of medical publications. The textbook Részletes sebészet , published for the first time by the Tankönyvkiadó publishing house in Budapest in 1951, was one of the standard works for students in surgical training in Hungary at the time.

Appreciation

His work was highly valued not only in Hungary, but also abroad. In 1959, Endre Hedri received an honorary medical doctorate from the University of Leipzig. He also became a corresponding member of the German Surgical Society. At the end of his life he was elected President of the Sándor Korányi Society . The doctor and former colleague Zoltán Zsebők describes Hedri in his obituary as a “ humanist ” who has always cared about the well-being of all his patients.
