Zoltán Zsebők

Zoltán (Bálint) Zsebõk (born June 28, 1908 in Budapest ; † February 20, 1984 ibid) was a Hungarian radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist .

Life

The family came from near Veszprém . His father Bálint was a cutter and later a director of a cooperative. Zsebők attended the reformed grammar school on Lónyay Street ( Lónyay Utcai Református Főgimnázium ) in Budapest, where he graduated from high school in 1926. He completed his medical studies at the Péter Pázmány University in 1934 as a general doctor.

From 1934 to 1939 Zsebők first worked as an assistant doctor at the Rókus Hospital ( Rókus Kórház ) and then at the Loránd Eötvös Radiology Institute ( Eötvös Loránd Rádium és Röntgen Intézet ). In 1939 he passed the examination to become a specialist in radiology. Between 1939 and 1944 he worked as chief physician at hospitals in Munkács and Beregszász . He then worked in a military hospital in 1944 and 1945.

From 1945 he was first State Secretary at the Ministry of Public Welfare, then at the Ministry of Education, and in 1947 and 1948 head of department there. He played an important role in rebuilding the medical facilities in Budapest after the war. In 1947 he completed his habilitation with a radiological thesis and was licensed as a private lecturer. From 1948 he worked as a lecturer in the radiological department, which was integrated into the construction of the 1st Surgical Clinic at Semmelweis University .

In 1955, Zsebõk was awarded the Kossuth Prize . From 1962 until his retirement in 1978 he was a professor at the radiology clinic. It is connected with the introduction of modern radiological methods in Hungary. He was also the chairman of the National Peace Council and was involved in the Hungarian Red Cross and the Reformed Church. Zsebők was elected honorary member of several foreign scientific societies, such as the Leopoldina in 1972 . He was also a member of the editorial team of several domestic and foreign magazines. The Zoltán Zsebők Specialist Clinic ( Zsebők Zoltán Szakrendelő ) in Budapest is named after him.
