Proscriptor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emperor Proscriptor Magikus or Sir Proscriptor McGovern , usually called Proscriptor for short (civil Russ R. Givens ) is an American musician and occultist and the operator of Tarot Productions. He is particularly known as the drummer of the band Absu , where his drumming serves as the root of the compositions.

biography

Born in Armenia, Givens came into contact with Peyote and Aleister Crowley's The Book of Thoth at the age of 13 through a friend , which changed his metaphysical ideas and consciousness; in this and in his relation to his own Scottish-Irish background he sees the origins of his interest in occultism and Celtic mythology .

Givens' first band, Ossuaryist, was formed in mid-1990; this played Death Metal / Grindcore and released the demo recording Themes of Intussusception . The death / doom metal / grindcore band Magus emerged from Ossuarist in October 1991 . In this, both he and bassist Ray Barrera wrote the lyrics, including the one inspired by Aleister Crowley and the Tarot for The Magus . The unicursal hexagram on the cover of Ruminations of Debauchery also indicates Thelema influences.

In 1992 Proscriptor became a member of the band Absu, founded in 1989 under the name Dolmen, and of Equimanthorn ; Here, too, there are thelemic influences, for example the use of the unicursal hexagram on the label of the Tara CD and quotes from the Book of Thoth in parts of the song Fantasizing to the Third of the Pagan Vision (Quoth the Sky, Nevermore Act II) from the debut album Barathrum: VITRIOL and in the Tara booklet. In the late 1990s he also became a drummer for Judas Iscariot . In 2001 he recorded the intro and outro of a Thornspawn mini-LP.

Due to personal problems, Proscriptor left Absu at short notice in 2001. In February 2002 he completed an audition with Slayer as the new drummer, but then returned to the band, which Equitant had previously left. The band had meanwhile started writing songs for the next album, but the motivation of the remaining members reached its low point when Proscriptor broke his left wrist in an accident in the summer of 2002. Some orthopedic surgeons were not optimistic about Proscriptor's ability to play the drums in the future. During his healing process he was supported by custom-made plaster casts and was even able to play the drums better afterwards than before the break. He then flew to the Netherlands and Sweden to record the album Sphynx with Melechesh . When he returned to Dallas in January 2003, Shaftiel, the last remaining founding member of Absu, had left the band. Proscriptor initially did not continue Absu, but devoted himself to his role as father and also recorded two albums with Equimanthorn and one with Starchaser Network, was a member of the short-lived band The Turning, which he describes as a mistake, played with Melechesh at a festival and founded Tarot Productions. In 2007 he reformed Absu, due to the disinterest of Equitant and Shaftiel, he continues the band with a new line-up without them.
