Emergence

On October 8, 2001, Absu announced a self-titled album that the band is currently composing and arranging and will record the following year. According to the title, the band will focus more on mythology and magic / magick of the ancient Sumerians than on Celtic stories and Kabbalah . Absu is currently working with a new guitarist, whose name will not be announced until the official entry, and is preparing for live performances in 2002. Due to his fragile relationship, however , Proscriptor stopped working with Absu for four months at the end of 2001 and auditioned for Slayer . After his return, Equitant Absu left in April 2002, but the band continued without him. While working on the album Absu , Proscriptor broke the bones in his left wrist in an accident. The work on the album was stopped, the guitarists lost their motivation. Some of the orthopedic surgeons were "not exactly optimistic" about Proscriptor's ability to play the drums again. However, thanks to tailor-made bandages and rehabilitation measures, he was soon able to play the drums again, ironically better than before the accident. After the healing he flew to the Netherlands and then to Sweden to rehearse and record their third album Sphynx with the band Melechesh . After he returned to Dallas in early January 2003, Shaftiel announced his exit. Proscriptor then dissolved Absu and devoted himself to his role as father, other music projects and tarot productions, for which he also opened his own production studio.

In the spring of 2007, Proscriptor turned to Aethyris because "Shaftiel and Equitant were no longer interested in continuing the band". Aethyris mentioned a lead guitarist named Vastator who "would be an ideal replacement for Shaftiel"; But he stayed with the band for only six months and left because of musical differences. Four of the songs on the album were composed by him. After his departure, Proscriptor and Aethyris recruited their musician friend Zawicizuz from Infernal Oak, Rape Pillage and Burn Fame. Absu took on the role of producer and sound engineer himself, with Candlelight Records as executive producer . Zawicizuz was in charge of pre-production, and the sound engineers for the drums were Gary Long and Sterling Winfield. Absu was mixed by JT Longoria, the mastering was done by Proscriptor.

After the album was recorded, bassist and co-vocalist Ezezu was contacted by the Texan band Panzram to complete the line-up. With Proscriptor on drums and vocals, Ezezu on vocals and bass, Aethyris on guitar and Zawicizuz on guitar as well as background singer, the recordings for the live DVD, which comes with the special edition of the album, were also made.

Reviews

According to Stahlschrulle from metal.de , the album is "less mythical" due to the Thrash Metal elements that are even more pronounced than Tara , which, however, "should not be viewed as a point of criticism at this point" due to the high quality of the album; the “lack of mysticism ” is “compensated for by the instrumental pieces”. In addition, Proscriptors drumming was praised, which one does not notice the temporary impairment. Absu is "a hot contender for the best album of the year, [...] full of sophistication" and "therefore deserves the unreserved purchase recommendation".

Travis from Diabolical Conquest, on the other hand, sees neither a reinvention nor a particularly daring step in a new direction nor a spiritual continuation of the previous material. Proscriptor's voice was still the band's weak point, and their own esotericism had now crossed the line between the pseudo- arcane narrative you 'd expect from a fantasy writer with a few books on mythology and the irony of any other metal band . The lyrics all correspond to the same formula.

The rock-hard magazine put the album on the list of "250 Black Metal Albums You Should Know".
