Enthroned is a black metal band from Belgium .

history

Enthroned emerged from the death metal / grindcore band Blasphereion and Morbid Death after their breakup and was founded in December 1993 by Cernunnos (Dan Vandeplas) together with guitarist Tsebaoth from the band Slanesh and singer Sabathan, who also took over the bass. After eight months, the band made their first promo / demo recording in August 1994 . In September 1994, the music label After Dark Records contacted the band, who signed for an album. In December 1994, one appeared Picture - Split - EP with Ancient Rites , on the Enthroned title Scared by Dark Winds from their promo tape was released.

In April 1995 the band went into the studio to record their first studio album Prophecies of Pagan Fire , but a month later After Dark Records ceased operations. Evil Omen Records from France took over the contract and released the album in December 1995; The cover was designed by Kris Verwimp, a friend of the band who was inspired by the music and the lyrics. In the same year, Nornagest of the band Heresia joined Enthroned as the second guitarist, and the original guitarist Tseboath was replaced by Nebiros.

Since the release of their first demo, Enthroned has played with Marduk , Enslaved , Dark Funeral , Angel Corpse , Gehenna , Luciferion and Emperor . In 1996 the band toured the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal with Ancient Rites and Bewitched .

In April 1997, when Enthroned wanted to start recording their second studio album Towards the Skullthrone of Satan , drummer Cernunnos, who was manic-depressed , committed suicide. Nevertheless, the band continued to record with session drummer Da Cardoen. With the appearance at the Dragons Blaze Festival in Belgium in 1998, the new drummer Namroth Blackthorn also played his first concert with the band. In April 1998 the band toured Europe again with Dark Funeral and released the EP directed by Sathanas in honor of their late band colleague Cernunnos. At the end of the year the band went on tour with Hecate Enthroned and Usurper and began recording their third album, The Apocalypse Manifesto, in the famous Swedish Abyss Studios of Peter Tägtgren . The album was released in May 1999, followed by a European tour with Marduk and some live performances in Germany , the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and France.

In 2000 guitarist Nebiros was replaced by Nerath Daemon. After a tour through Germany and a few other smaller appearances, the band began to record their fourth studio album Armored Bestial Hell in the German Real Sound Studio , which was released in April 2001. Namroth Blackthorn left the band and was replaced by Alsvid from the French band Seth. With him on drums, Enthroned played numerous concerts in Europe and the United States .

In early 2002 the band signed a contract with the Austrian record label Napalm Records , under which their fifth studio album Carnage was released in Worlds Beyond . In June 2003 the band was restructured again. Nguaroth replaced Nerath Daemon, who no longer had enough time for enthroned due to his studies, on guitar and the post on drums was taken over by Glaurung. In the summer of 2003, Enthroned toured South America and released their sixth album, XES Haereticum .

Their first official live album Black Goat Ritual: Live in thy Flesh was recorded in Porto Alegre , Brazil and released in 2005. After a few concerts and festivals the longtime singer Sabathan left the band, Nornagest took over the vocals and Phorgath was accepted into the band as bassist.

In June 2007, Enthroneds seventh studio album Tetra Karcist was recorded. Alsvid, the former drummer, played the drums for the recordings. After the recordings for the album, Ahephaïm took over the drums. At the beginning of 2008, Enthroned signed a new contract with the Swedish label Regain Records ; Napalm Records was interested in a new three more albums after the contract ended, but Regain Records offered a better deal, according to Nornagest.

In March 2010, the band's eighth studio album was released under the name Pentagrammaton .

style

The band plays a black metal style typical of the 1990s with strong similarities to the music of Scandinavian bands. Lord Sabathan Occulta emphasized, however, that the band did not want to move away from the black metal concept with "original" music. Despite the great respect for Euronymous and the Scandinavian black metal scene, the band is not influenced by it, but orientates itself on Venom , Mercyful Fate , Hellhammer , Celtic Frost , Bathory , Possessed , the early works of Sodom , Slayer , Kreator and Destruction and old heavy metal like King Diamond , Judas Priest , Motörhead and the early works of Iron Maiden , Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne . The band kept their style; Thom Jurek from allmusic wrote in his review of Tetra Karcist that, with the exception of the “experimental” album Armored Bestial Hell , every single Enthroned album sounds the same.

Lord Sabathan Occulta saw Satanism as the only true concept for true Black Metal that must remain a cult of true worshipers. Therefore, he also proclaimed the fight against trend bands to keep the scene clean and to spread the spirit of Euronymous. The band also emphasized that Black Metal was "born amidst violence and aggression". The Apocalypse Manifesto interprets the biblical apocalypse from a satanic perspective. On the album XES Haereticum “Western European antichristism, the Indian Thug cult or the Amon worshipers were the focus”. According to Nornagest, however, Sabathan no longer stood behind his previous satanic beliefs and therefore no longer behind the concept of Enthroned, which is why he had to leave the band. Nornagest emphasizes that the band's members are involved in Satanism and the occult ; However, he does not want to share his personal vision of Satanism with everyone, he only conveys a few things such as visions, concepts and some beliefs in his texts and interviews and otherwise regards this as a personal matter.
