Anton Steinbach (born April 10, 1844 in Werl , † March 8, 1918 in Hattingen ) was a German local poet and teacher.

Life

In 1866 Steinbach took up a teaching position in Arnsberg- Müschede . In 1870 he married Catharina Elisabeth Voss from one of the oldest and largest Müscheder farms. Their first three children Theodor, Norbert and Elisabeth were born in Müschede in 1871, 1872 and 1874. In 1874 Anton Steinbach and his family moved from Müschede to Castrop , as the old town school there offered him better earning opportunities.

In Müschede he had collected and worked on the legends about the “old man from Müssenberge”, who was a kind of Rübezahl of the Sauerland and lived in Müssenberg, Müschede's local mountain. He shaped the figure of this mountain spirit into a moral authority with the educational effect he intended on adolescents. He continued his literary work in his new home.

Around 1900 Anton Steinbach published the Müscheder stories under the title “Der Alte vom Müssenberge or Ein Westphalian Rübezahl” in two small volumes, which became a kind of required reading in the Müscheder school and the schools in the neighboring towns. At about this time, the same publishing house published the series “Precious stones - an illustrated youth publication”, in which he was also involved. He got involved in the now almost forgotten " Hermann Hubertus Foundation " in Bochum , which brought out a collection of illustrated stories for the Catholic youth and the people under the title "Jugendperlen".

He was involved in Kamp's Realienbuch at the school book publisher Kamp, and in the series “Reading wreath” by the publishing house GJ Manz in Regensburg , he and Pastor Friedrich Schnettler from Bruchhausen / Ruhr published numerous translations from Dutch and in the same series the volumes: “Bei Schlichten Menschen ". Around 1880 published by Philipp Reclam jun. in Leipzig the band: "Holländische Novellen" by JJ Cremer, which were translated by W. Lange, Fr. Schnettler and A. Steinbach. In 1891 he and Josef Dahmen published “The Fatherland Memorial Days” and “Homage to the Provinces of Prussia” by Stein in Werl. State for the birthday of Sr. Majesty of the Emperor u. King Wilhelm II., Festgabe f. higher u. lower schools. "

In Steinbach's obituary it is mentioned that he continued to work untiringly as a folk writer and board member of the Hermann Hubertus Foundation for Catholic teachers in his retirement.
