Gehenna is a Norwegian black / death metal band from Stavanger .

history

Gehenna was founded in 1993 by Sanrabb, Dolgar and Sir Vereda. Their first demo Black Seared Heart was released in early 1993. Shortly thereafter, Sir Vereda left the band and was replaced by Dirge Rep. Svartalv also joined the band as a bass player.

In 1994, Necromantic Gallery Productions released their first single, Ancestor of the Darkly Sky . This aroused the interest of No Fashion Records in Sweden. They sent the band to the studio to record their debut album, but work had to be stopped due to lack of money. Three songs appeared on the re-release of the first demo through Holycaust Records. After that they played live several times. An appearance was recorded and broadcast in the legendary television report Det Svarte Alvor on Norwegian television. In 1994 Sarcana joined the band as a keyboard player. The group then performed in the Oslo Metal Pub together with Dark Funeral , Gorgoroth , Dissection and Enslaved . The band then signed with Head Not Found , who released their debut MCD First Spell , and Cacophonous Records , who released their second album, Seen Through the Veils of Darkness, in 1995 . For the song Vinteriket , Garm took on the guest vocals from Arcturus and Ulver .

In 1996 the third album Malice was released . Then Svartalv got out, who was replaced first by Noctifer, then by EN Death. The group performed at the Under the Black Sun festival and toured Europe with Marduk and Mysticum . In 1997 Sarcana and Dirge Rep left the band and were replaced by Damien and Blod. The band got a contract with Moonfog Productions . The first publications there were the EP Deadlights and the album Adimiron Black (1998).

In 2000 the album Murder was released . There were some line-ups again and the band had to take a break until a permanent line-up was created with Dolgar (vocals, bass) and Amok (guitar). The album WW , a concept album about the two world wars , was released in 2005. The album was written almost exclusively by Sanrabb.

Thrown back again by various line-up problems, including losing their contract with the ANP Records label, it was eight years before the album Unravel was released in 2013 on the Norwegian label Indie Recordings.

At the beginning of 2015 the album Adimiron Black was indexed by the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors .

style

music

At the beginning the band was mostly rooted in symphonic black metal . The band themselves described the music as a mixture of classical music and heavy metal . In fact, the band broke with this style after the Malice album . The follow-up album was more Death Metal, while the band took over a style with WW , which was based on classic Black Metal of the second wave, especially Mayhem and Burzum .

Texts

With the exception of the concept album WW, all lyrics are influenced by the satanic ideology of Sanrabb, who lives an individualized form of Satanism and understands Satan as an evil force to which he submits.
