Ulver ( Norwegian for 'Wolves') is a band from Norway , the first black metal and a kind Neofolk played and Industrial Metal to trip-hop , ambient , a sort of post-rock and electronic pop music found these different styles but often together mixed up. She has been nominated several times for the Spellemann Prize.

history

Black metal phase

The founding members Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg and Carl-Michael "Exhurtum" Eide met at school in the early 1990s. Eide was the drummer of Eczema at the time , but was dismissed from the band because he had different interests than the other members. A little later he suggested that Rygg found Ulvers, who initially played Thrash Metal .

On the demo Vargnatt (1993), allegedly recorded in a “troll forest”, and the split EP Ulverytternes Kamp / Mourning with Mysticum (1994), Ulver already combined raw metal, acoustic passages, variable vocals and varied rhythms in a very independent way. Kristoffer Rygg knew Metalion , publisher of the fanzine Slayer and owner of the Head Not Found label , from the Oslo nightlife and gave him the demo after much enthusiasm for his band. Metalion liked it and offered Ulver a contract and NOK 5,000 to record an album. Initially this was planned as a split release with Gehenna , whom Metalion had met through Rygg; But then, in 1994, Gehenna released their debut First Spell as an independent EP on Head Not Found, presumably because of disagreements regarding the inclusion of the Voices of Wonder label . So Ulver also released their Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler, recorded in November and December 1994, as an independent album in early 1995, despite the relatively short playing time . The band then played folk- influenced black metal . Bergtatt was characterized by a fast pace, sober electric guitars , acoustic passages, the alternation of screaming and anthemic singing, as well as a fairytale storyline and ancient language. It can be seen as a concept album , which in Black Metal introduced a turn towards local customs , romantic nostalgia and mythical supernaturalness. The Rock Hard took Bergtatt later in its list of the 25 most important black metal albums of all time. In the scene, however, the band had more of an outsider status.

During the band's first few years there were already several line-up changes. The musicians Carl-Michael Eide, Ali Reza, Grellmund and Robin Malmberg who took part in the demo alongside Kristoffer Rygg and Håvard Jørgensen left the band at the end of 1993. Erik Olivier "AiwarikiaR" Lancelot , Skoll and Torbjørn "Aismal" Pedersen replaced them from 1994 onwards. This line-up remained stable until after the third album in 1996. The second album Kveldssanger followed in 1995 (also on Head Not Found) and was in stark contrast to the first; According to Rygg, the musical tastes of the young musicians had changed in the meantime. There were no more electric guitars or screaming singing on the album, instead folklore , acoustic music and chamber cantatas . So even though Ulver didn't play black metal on the album, it was repeatedly referred to as an important album of the scene. Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg called Kveldssanger "immature", but later stated that the comment was related to the execution and was exaggerated.

After the melodic Bergtatt and the acoustic Kveldssanger , the third album Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne Til Ulven i Manden , actually written before Kveldssanger , was more puristic and aggressive than Ulver's previous releases. Style and production have been kept raw, with Ulvers new label Century Black calling the album a return to traditional black metal. Similar to the demo, it was rumored that Natten's madrigal was recorded in a forest. In addition, based on relevant press photos, the band had bought new suits and a black Corvette from Century Media's advance payments . In fact, Rygg saw the deliberately raw production as a reaction to an incipient commercial exploitation of Black Metal - u. a. through labels like Century Media.

All three of the first albums by the then still young musicians have in common that they were created under the influence of school lessons in language, literature and folklore from medieval Denmark-Norway . The lyrics were written in an archaic, poetic Norwegian (called old Danish by the band), whereby the impression of an old language is also achieved through the (partly freely fantasized) orthography. The first three albums, a trilogy about the "darker aspects of Norwegian folklore", were released as limited box sets by Century Media in 1997 under the title The Trilogie - Three Journeyes Through the Norwegian Netherworlde and in 2014 with the demo and other rare recordings under the Title Trolsk Sortmetall 1993–1997 reissued.

On May 29 and 30, 1996 Ulver recorded with Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg of Mayhem and Arcturus on drums the track Synen , which was released in 1997 on the compilation Souvenirs from Hell by Cthulhu Records .

Turning to electronic music

After Natten's madrigal , guitarist Torbjørn “Aismal” Pedersen left the band, he was replaced by Arcturus' Knut Magne Valle . In addition, Tore Ylwizaker became a new member of the band. Rygg had discovered bands like Coil and came across a copy of William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell in an occult bookstore in 1996 while on a trip to London with Ihsahn . As a result, Ulver moved away with the 1998 album Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell , the first record label Jester Records founded on Ryggs in the same year, from black metal and integrated elements of industrial metal and ambient passages. The album, on which as a guest singer u. a. Ihsahn, Samoth and Fenriz recited the entire text of Blake's prophetic prose poem. It received good reviews from both metal and alternative fields. After Themes ... was part of a gift package for Haakon of Norway's wedding to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in 2001 , Ulver hit the headlines because of their allegedly satanic background.

The next two releases Metamorphosis and Perdition City were even more experimental. Ulver consisted only of Rygg and Ylwizaker; they moved further away from rock and metal towards an electronic genre, as represented by the bands Coil or The Future Sound of London . The title of the Metamorphosis EP was programmatic: it combined drum and bass , trip-hop and ambient and can be seen as a prelude to the trip-hop album Perdition City . A comment was printed in the inlay of the Metamorphosis EP, which expressed a clear rejection of Ulver's categorization as a black metal band. This was followed in 2001 by the purely instrumental and minimalist ambient releases Silence Teaches You How to Sing and Silencing the Singing , which were also released as a compilation in 2002 under the title Teachings in Silence and later nominated for the 2003 Spellemann Prize. In the same year Rygg also worked on a photo exhibition for the first Silence EP, and Ulver began to work on Natten's madrigal with a string quartet, which was never to be completed. The remix of a piece by Kveldssanger was made in 2002 and published on A Quick Fix of Melancholy . Ulver also recorded a Lee Hazlewood cover for a planned compilation by Ryggs label Jester Records in 2002 , but it never appeared.

On 1993-2003: 1st Decade in the Machines - for the 10th anniversary of the band - by various bands (including Merzbow ) and musicians (including Fennesz ) electronically reworked Ulver pieces from all previous creative periods were found.

Film music

Between 2001 and 2004 Ulver produced the film music for Lyckantropen , Svidd Neger , Uno and Salto, salmiakk og kaffe . The soundtrack Lyckantropen Themes , nominated for the Spellemann Prize, was arranged exclusively electronically and in a minimalist way, while on Svidd Neger the force of sound of an orchestra was repeatedly interrupted by ambient passages. The UN soundtrack was a cooperation with the composer Tom McRae , the film by director and actor Aksel Hennie won several awards. Ulver's contribution oscillated between melancholy violin and organ passages and the techno sounds that dominated the Metamorphosis EP . McRae's contributions to the film soundtrack included gangsta rap and hip-hop elements.

It was not until 2014, after 10 years of diverse musical activities, that Ulver composed a score again. In early 2014, the band worked at the Nationaltheatret on the music for the play Demoner 2014 , which is loosely based on Dostoyevsky's novel The Demons . Two years later, Ulver contributed the original soundtrack to Justin Oakey's film Riverhead .

Variety of styles

In July 2004 the band released the album with Jørn H. Sværen (a long-time friend of Rygg and already appeared as a songwriter and illustrator for the band) as a new member and some guest musicians (including Håvard Jørgensen, Mike Keneally , Carl-Michael Eide) Blood Inside finished, which was released on June 6, 2005. This album continued the experimental path that had been embarked on since the late 1990s, but was less reserved and controlled. Influences from different music genres (including rock and post-rock ) were mixed together, but the band also showed itself from a more accessible side. After ten very productive years, Ulver took a break from work; they justified this in July 2007 with a need for privacy and their dissatisfaction with the world and the music business. At the same time they announced the release of a new and her most personal album to, Shadows of the Sun . It sounded more homogeneous than the eclectic Blood Inside and partly got closer to Perdition City and Teachings in Silence . The style went even more towards ambient , various elements of chamber music or jazz could also be heard on Shadows of the Sun. The album was retrospectively voted one of the top 100 of the decade by the British music magazine Terrorizer and was ranked 67th.

Daniel O'Sullivan joined the band in 2009 and another very productive phase in Ulver's work was ushered in. The band performed live for the first time in 15 years. Further concerts followed. The live performance on July 31, 2010 in Oslo was finally released in November 2011 under the title The Norwegian National Opera by Kscope on DVD and Blu-ray Disc . The live album contained 17 tracks from the past 13 years; Kristoffer Rygg said he did not intend to perform live songs from the first three albums.

At the beginning of March 2011 the label Kscope announced the release of the new album Wars of the Roses for April 25th of that year. The band kept their dark style on the album and also took influences from art rock , gothic rock , wave and post rock in their compositions. On May 28, 2012, after Ulver had already started individual recordings in 2008, the album Childhood's End was released , which only contained cover versions of rock songs from the 1960s and thus the electronic and experimental arrangements of previous albums in favor of a more conventional instrumentation with guitar, Bass, drums and keyboards fade into the background. One of the pieces had already appeared a few weeks earlier on the occasion of a live performance at the Tilburg Roadburn Festival on the Roadburn EP. A recording of the performance was released a year later as Live at Roadburn - Eulogy for the Late Sixties .

At the end of 2012, Ulver again expressed their dissatisfaction with the music industry and announced that they would in future increasingly take care of the - especially digital - distribution of their music themselves. In the course of this, they released Oddities & Rarities # 1 , a compilation with pieces that z. B. on tribute albums or Uno - Soundtrack had appeared as a download. However, at Christmas 2013 the band's own web shop was closed again. Since then it has been referred to Bandcamp for the download of Ulvers Jester Records releases , but the compilation is not available there.

In August 2012, Ulver announced that they had been commissioned by Tromsø Kulturhus with a new work and its performance with the 21-piece Tromsø Chamber Orchestra . The first performance of the still untitled work took place on September 21, 2012. It was recorded and would form the basis for Ulver's next studio album. The title Fair IX – VI.X was announced in December of that year. At the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in May 2013, the mass with the STÜBAphilharmonie under the direction of Martin Lentz was performed in the Volkspalast . The album was released in August 2013. Another performance in November of that year with Pamelia Stickney and an orchestra at the Teatro Regio di Parma was recorded for a planned live album that has not yet been released.

After the band had already worked on one piece with Sunn O))) in 2006 , the collaboration album Terrestrials followed in February 2014 . In 2014 Ulver also contributed their version of a piece by the English folk singer to a cover album that was created parallel to a film about Shirley Collins financed by Kickstarter.com . Ulver contributed to a tribute album for the Norwegian rock band Raga Rockers in 2015. In June 2015, the band casually wrote about a planned album called The Assassination of Julius Caesar . But then recordings from twelve concerts in February 2014 were used as the basis for another album, which initially received the working title 12 . A first track ( Cromagnosis ) was heard on a Resonance FM broadcast at the end of October 2015 , followed by a short promo video on the YouTube channel of Ulver's new label House of Mythology in early November . At that time, newsletter subscribers were also able to access other extracts on Soundcloud . The album was ultimately released under the title ATGCLVLSSCAP (the initials of the zodiac ) on January 22, 2016. The Assassination of Julius Caesar should finally be presented at the Roadburn Festival in April 2017. As the first track of the new album, Nemoralia was released on March 15 on the House of Mythology YouTube channel, and a second track ( 1969 ) on March 21 on the CD supplement of Mojo magazine. The album was released about two weeks before the Roadburn Festival and stood out for its song-oriented and pop-influenced style. Afterwards the band also performed a. the Swiss Impetus Festival and the Donaufestival on. At the beginning of the European tour in November 2017, the band initially released the EP Sic Transit Gloria Mundi in digital form via Bandcamp . It contains two pieces that were created while working on the current album, as well as a cover from The Power of Love . A version expanded to include live recordings was put on vinyl a year later.

Ulver played at the Bergen International Festival in June 2018; a live recording from the Grieghalle was published as a stream in June 2020. The band was also invited by Red Bull Music for the Oslo edition of the international Red Bull festival series on October 13, 2018, to perform live for 90 minutes under the motto Drone Activity. Rygg, Halstensgård and Møller prepared the basic structures of new pieces for the performance, which was recorded and published in May 2019, slightly abridged, under the title Drone Activity . The title reflects the musical direction of the performance.

In February, April and July 2020, three singles were released on Bandcamp, which continued the synth-pop appeal of The Assassination of Julius Caesar . A video was also produced for the first single, Russian Doll . The singles should be found on the album Flowers of Evil announced for August 2020 . At the same time, Wolves Evolve is to be published as a book on the band's 25-year history.
