Childhood's End (subtitle: Lost & Found From the Age of Aquarius ) is an album by the Norwegian band Ulver . It was published on 28 May 2012 at Kscope and includes cover versions of rock songs of the late 1960s.

Creation and publication

Singer and composer Kristoffer Rygg says he came into contact with this music in his childhood through his parents. His continued interest in it inspired him to write this cover album.

The pieces were recorded at Crystal Canyon Studios in Oslo in autumn 2008 and summer 2011 . A number of guest musicians participated in the recordings: Sisi Sumbundu and Ingvild Langgård (vocals), Espen Jørgensen, Alexander Kloster-Jensen and Trond Mjøen (guitar), Lars Christian Folkvord and Mats Engen (bass), Anders Møller (tambourine and shaker) , Thomas Pettersen and Lars Pedersen (drums). Anders Møller mixed the album in the recording studio, Jaime Gomez Arellano mastered it in Orgone Studios in London.

On the occasion of an appearance by Ulver at the Roadburn Festival in April 2012, the cover version of The Electric Prunes ' I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night was released on the Roadburn EP six weeks before the album was released. (A recording of the performance was released a year later as Live at Roadburn - Eulogy for the Late Sixties .) A promo video was produced for the cover version of The Beau Brummels ' Magic Hollow , directed by Justin Oakey. A photograph by Hoang Van Danh was used for the cover artwork of the album, showing the same scene as Nick Út's famous photograph from the Vietnam War.

Since Ulver covers older rock songs on Childhood's End , the electronic and experimental arrangements of the previous albums take a back seat in favor of more conventional instrumentation with guitar, bass, drums and keyboard. Elements from various retro styles such as folk rock , garage rock , psychedelic rock , psychobilly or dream pop are now emerging .
