ATGCLVLSSCAP is an album by the Norwegian band Ulver . Although it is based on live recordings, the band does not consider it to be an actual live album due to the extensive studio post-production. It was published on January 22nd, 2016 by House of Mythology.

Creation and publication

In June 2015 the band announced a new album called The Assassination of Julius Caesar , which soon after was preferred to work on another release with the working title 12 . It should be based on the recordings of twelve concerts (in Oslo, Helsinki, Gdansk, Berlin, Prague, Zurich, Vienna, Munich, Cologne, Tilburg, Milan and Rome) from February 2014 made by sound engineer Chris Fullard. Live members were Ole Alexander Halstensgård (electronics), Anders Møller (percussion) and Ivar Thormodsæter (drums). Daniel O'Sullivan sifted through the material, which was based in some parts on pieces from Perdition City , A Quick Fix of Melancholy and Mass IX-VI.X , but was largely improvised. O'Sullivan as well as Kristoffer Rygg , Tore Ylwizaker and Anders Møller chose from these , edited the recordings and made pre-mixes in London and Oslo. Studio overdubs were also used. Jaime Gomez Arellano mastered the album at Orgone Studios in London. It was ultimately named ATGCLVLSSCAP - the initials of the twelve signs of the zodiac and thus an allusion to the twelve concerts and the twelve pieces on the album. A first track ( Cromagnosis ) was heard on a Resonance FM broadcast at the end of October 2015 , followed by a short promo video on the YouTube channel of Ulver's new label House of Mythology in early November . At that time, newsletter subscribers were also able to access other extracts on Soundcloud . Pre-orderers on Bandcamp were able to access two full tracks from January 17th, 2016. ATGCLVLSSCAP was released on CD, double LP (black and limited red, white, green and transparent) and as a download on January 22nd, followed by a limited MC edition on August 25th.

style

Although live improvisations were mainly used for ATGCLVLSSCAP , the album leaves a composed impression. It is mostly instrumental, sets itself apart from the often minimalist EPs and at various points reminds us of either the anthemic Shadows of the Sun and Mass IX – VI.X , the psychedelic Childhood's End and the hypnotic Terrestrials , or Krautrock bands like Cluster , Tangerine Dream , Kraftwerk and New! as well as in compositions by Klaus Schulze , Bernard Herrmann and John Carpenter . The webzine Stormbringer describes the "not really writable [cash]" style as "rampant [n], jam session -mäßige [n] Progressive - Ambient -Rock which waives any copywriting and a sound coexistence of guitars, synths and Drums sets. "

reception

The first reactions to the album were positive. Benjamin Bland of Drowned in Sound described ATGCLVLSSCAP , despite its length, as a great and even triumphant psychedelic album that plays with listener expectations. Tristan Bath from The Quietus emphasized that it was Ulver's most successful and best balanced experiment. Louder than War's John Robb praised the album as a "dazzling listening adventure" and "dark masterpiece of groundbreaking music" because it is so multifaceted and exciting; Mathias Klammer from Stormbringer had a similar opinion: “An exciting, stirring, suspenseful and sometimes grueling listening experience of a very special kind.” ATGCLVLSSCAP was able to place itself in the Norwegian and Finnish charts for one week each.
