Messe IX – VI.X is the tenth studio album by the Norwegian band Ulver . It was released in August 2013 by Jester Records and in September 2013 by Kscope .

Creation and publication

In August 2012, Ulver announced that they had been commissioned by Tromsø Kulturhus with a new work and its performance with the 21-piece Tromsø Chamber Orchestra . Instead of Daniel O'Sullivan , Ole Alexander Halstensgård worked with the band, and Martin Romberg was also involved as arranger. The first performance of the still untitled work took place on September 21, 2012. The rehearsals for this had been recorded and should form the basis for Ulver's next studio album. The title Fair IX – VI.X was announced in December of that year. At the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in May 2013, the mass with the STÜBAphilharmonie under the direction of Martin Lentz was performed in the Volkspalast .

The release via Jester Records and distributed by Neuropa Records was originally announced for August 1, 2013. Due to the number of pre-orders, the delivery of the CD edition was delayed by almost two weeks, the delivery of the LP edition by three weeks due to quality defects in the pressing. The digital publication via Ulvers Webshop and Bandcamp was initially announced for September 1, 2013, but then took place on August 18 to forestall illegal distribution of files. The album was released on September 23rd via Spotify , the iTunes Store and other platforms, as were Kscope's CD and LP editions .

style

With its echoes of classical music , ambient and experimental rock, the album some similarities to Shadows of the Sun on. The atmosphere is just as gloomy, but Mass IX – VI.X is arranged in a less minimalist way overall. In places the psychedelic style of Childhood's End can also be heard. Ulver are influenced by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki , Gustav Mahler , Gustav Holst , When , Nurse with Wound , Ash Ra Tempel , Kraftwerk , John Carpenter and Terry Riley . The pieces, which hardly follow typical song structures, often increase from calm soundscapes to threatening-looking, more densely arranged passages - mix both extremes or alternate between them. Much of the album is instrumental.

reception

Morten Rydland Høyning from the Tromsø daily newspaper Nordlys was impressed by the demanding premiere.

"There is a lot of stemnessfullt and majesty, the vacre avløses of the dramatics, the tides with melanoma in the bunnen."

"It was all very atmospheric and majestic, the beautiful was replaced by the dramatic, the whole time with subliminal melancholy."

- Morten Rydland Høyning : Nordlys

maskofgojira from the blog Don't Count On It Reviews wrote one of the first reviews of the album. He wasn't sure whether Mass IX – VI.X would hold its own against earlier works like Perdition City or Shadows of the Sun , and whether fans of Natten's madrigal would like it. However, he judged the further development of the band as gratifying and described Messe as an album not to be missed. The other reactions to the album were also positive. For Jochen Rindfrey from Babyblauen Seiten this opens a "new, fascinating chapter in the history of Ulver", Captain Chaos from vampster finds it "so understandable, so beautiful, so deep, so beguiling that everyone comes along who wants to come" . The music magazine Visions took Exhibition in 2015 as part of a Prog -Specials in a list of pioneering avant-garde albums are on, because the album befördere "the idea of the Progressive his experimental external border".
