Shadows of the Sun is the seventh studio album by the Norwegian band Ulver . It was released in 2007 on The End Records under license from Jester Records.

Creation and publication

Ulver went quiet for two years after Blood Inside . They justified this in July 2007 with a need for privacy and their dissatisfaction with the world and the music business. At the same time, they announced the release of a new and their most personal album to date for October.

Shadows of the Sun was recorded in the Ambassaden Studio in Oslo. A string quartet as well as Mathias Eick (trumpet), Fennesz , Espen Jørgensen (guitar) and Pamelia Kurstin ( theremin ) took part in the recordings . The album was mastered by Audun Strype. It was released as a regular CD, in a limited leather book and on LP with a different cover .

style

Unlike the eclectic and loud Blood Inside , Shadows of the Sun is a mostly organic and calm album. The soft and warm sounds of the ambient and Rygg's breathy vocals dominate. Occasionally the harmonic soundscapes are disturbed by dissonant brass instruments, shrill effects or hectic rhythms, which also gives the album a dark and threatening atmosphere.

reception

“All in all, this is an enjoyable, at times hypnotic album that consolidates a lot of the different strands of Ulver's music over the previous decade. They have developed a unique, quickly identifiable sound during that time, and this album is a nice variation on that signature sound. "

- William York : Allmusic

“I have to admit that Shadows of the Sun seemed a little bloodless at first. Only further listening sessions revealed the fascinating effect of this apparently unspectacular music [...]. Still, it doesn't quite match the more varied Wars of the Roses , which appeared a few years later . "
