The Assassination of Julius Caesar is the thirteenth album by the Norwegian band Ulver . It was published by House of Mythology in April 2017.
Creation and publication
In June 2015, the band casually wrote about a planned album called The Assassination of Julius Caesar . But then recordings from twelve concerts in February 2014 were used as the basis for ATGCLVLSSCAP . The regular studio album The Assassination of Julius Caesar was first announced in October 2016 for presentation at the Roadburn Festival in late April 2017. A first track ( Nemoralia ) could be heard on March 15th on the YouTube channel of the House of Mythology label, a second track ( 1969 ) from March 21st on the CD supplement of Mojo magazine. The album was then released about two weeks before the Roadburn Festival on CD, on black, gold, marbled and transparent vinyl and as a download.
In addition to the permanent band members Kristoffer Rygg , Jørn H. Sværen and Tore Ylwizaker , Daniel O'Sullivan , Ole Alexander Halstensgård and Anders Møller were again involved in the recordings, which took place in Oslo from summer 2016 to winter 2017. Guest musicians were Rikke Normann, Sisi Sumbundu (vocals), Stian Westerhus , Håvard Jørgensen (guitar), Dag Stiberg, Nik Turner (saxophone) and Ivar Thormodsæter (drums). The album was mixed by Martin Glover and Michael Rendell in London and mastered by Michael Lawrence in Hastings.

Music, lyrics and booklet
Due to its influences from trip-hop , dark wave and electro-pop , The Assassination of Julius Caesar differs from ATGCLVLSSCAP and shows some stylistic and atmospheric similarities to Ulver's publications around the turn of the millennium. However, the album is more rooted in the 1980s, more song-oriented and more accessible. Overall comparisons were made with Talk Talk and Erasure , with Nemoralia in particular compared with Depeche Mode , So Falls the World with Adele , Southern Gothic and 1969 with David Bowie .
For the first time since Childhood's End , an Ulver release includes vocals throughout. The lyrics and the artwork - like the title of the album - refer to well-known real and mythological events, deaths and assassinations. A detail of a mythological sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was used for the cover . Nemoralia - first published in the Ides of March - brings the accidental death of Diana, Princess of Wales in connection with the Roman torch festival in honor of the goddess Diana ("Nemoralia") and this in turn with the great fire of Rome . So Falls the World deals with the fall of the Roman Empire , transverberation alludes to Mehmet Ali Ağca's act of papacy , to Teresa von Ávila and Therese von Lisieux , 1969 a . a. to the moon landing and the Manson Family . In the booklet, the song texts are flanked by thematically appropriate, historical photos or images of works of art. These include z. B. Jean-Léon Gérômes Bonaparte devant le Sphinx , Robert F. Many reviewers were ultimately not surprised by the again unpredictable style of the album given the band's history. “The nice thing about Ulver is that you are not only allowed to do everything anyway, but can do everything.” Langdon Hickman from the music website Treble does not consider The Assassination of Julius Caesar to be an aesthetic revolution, but he thinks the songs are first class - with their typical Ulver pretense . He also praises how Ulver explores a European identity in the song lyrics based on idolized and killed personalities. Josh Gray of The Quietus doesn't think the album is pretentious like previous works by the band, he describes it as an "opulent, uncynical pop album". More melodic and simpler than any Ulver album before, it was a “daring experiment” and a “resounding success”. Alex Klug from laut.de describes The Assassination of Julius Caesar as "the most provocative creative leap since the nineteen-year-old liberation ' The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell '".
