history

It was founded in the mid-1990s as a duo by Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson as a tribute band to the American group Earth . Your name refers to the amplifier manufacturer Sunn . The written representation of the name of the group goes back to the logo, which is supposed to represent waves emanating from a center behind the lettering “Sunn”. The logo is an imitation of the amplifier manufacturer's logo / word mark .

Inspired by the early releases of the Melvins , and especially the debut album Earth 2 from Earth began Sunn O))), then still as Mars than Earth tribute band in Los Angeles . The first releases of the duo The Grimmrobe Demos and ØØ Void were released in 2000 on the Hydra Head Records sub-label Double H Noise Industries .

In 1998 O'Malley and Anderson founded the experimental Doom Metal label Southern Lord , which later released albums by Sunn O))), side projects and inspirations such as Earth, Goatsnake and Khanate . With their third album Flight of the Behemoth , the group incorporated percussion and vocals into their sound and began a creative development that continued with White 1 in 2003 and White 2 in 2004. The duo released The Libations of Samhain and Live White in 2004, Solstitium Fulminate in 2005 as part of a limited Black One Special Edition, La Mort Noir in 2006 , Dømkirke in 2008 and Agharti Live 09-10 in 2011 .

With Black, released a year after White 2 , Sunn O))) mixed the sound of early releases with elements of electronic music . With the album Altar , which was released in 2006, the band began ongoing collaborations with other musicians of the avant-garde and extreme metal , after this project with the Japanese band Boris the band collaborated with Earth, Nurse With Wound , Ulver and Scott Walker, among others . The critically acclaimed Monoliths & Dimensions was released in 2009. Since this album at the latest, Sunn O))) have been the most successful and best-known group in the genre. style

Sunn O))) at the Brutal Assault 2015

Sunn O))) mainly plays Drone Doom . Comparatively long pieces with very slow rhythms and broken bars , which are filled with deep humming sounds, develop their effect more on an atmospheric level. The tuning of the guitars is like that of seven-string guitars , only shifted down a whole tone .

The Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar acts on the albums White 2 , Monoliths & Dimensions and Kannon as a singer and performing live with the band. In addition, Sunn O))) regularly work with other guest musicians, including Merzbow , Julian Cope , Oren Ambarchi and John Wiese. In addition, their album ØØ Void was remixed by Nurse with Wound .
