Black One is the fifth studio album by the US drone band Sunn O))) .

Emergence

Various guest musicians can be heard on the album. To record the vocals for the song Báthory Erzsébet , which is a tribute to the Swedish band Bathory , the band locked the claustrophobic Malefic in a cage . He recorded other songs at home. According to the band, the ideas for style and concept were only developed during the recording in the studio.

Style and content

Sunn O))) wanted to integrate "the aesthetics, atmosphere and certain sounds of Black Metal " on the album . Cursed Realms (Of the Winterdemons) is a cover version of the song of the same name by Immortal . Screams that are unusual for the genre are used. Sound effects such as B. Wind noises in Cursed Realms (Of the Winter Demons) are used.

Reviewer Eddie Solis compares the sound with "black textures straight from hell" and finds Black One to be the "darkest" release of Sunn O))) s. stylusmagazine.com sees references to earlier releases by other metal bands throughout the album . popmatters.com recognizes structures in the album that are “as sluggish as they are desolate”.

Greg Anderson , looking back (in an interview with Monoliths & Dimensions ), thinks the album is very “dark, deep and intense”. Stephen O'Malley thinks it explores "the emotional qualities of Sunn O))) s".

reception

The reviewer Brandon Stosuy, who gave the album the rating “best new music” in the review, described the album as a “doom'n'gloom masterpiece”.

After Black One , Sunn O))) also received special attention from the Black Metal scene, some also assigned the band to the genre. The New York Times also mentioned the album as a "breakthrough" in a 2006 article.
