Stephen O'Malley (born July 15, 1974 ) is an American musician, graphic artist and journalist.

biography

In the 1990s, O'Malley and Tyler Davis published the black metal magazine Descent , 5 issues of which appeared and which also included industrial bands and musicians; he also wrote for other publications such as Slayer , Metal Maniacs , Ledo Takas and Seconds . In 1995 he wrote an article called Nordic Darkness ... for the American right-wing rock magazine Resistance of the Resistance Records label , in which Descent also advertised. An interview with Varg Vikernes published by O'Malley in Descent in 1994 was reprinted in 1996 in the Swedish right-wing rock magazine Nordland . He also worked for Misanthropy Records , including the design and artwork (with the exception of the cover) for the album Hliðskjálf from Vikernes' project Burzum .

In 1996 he worked on the power electronics project Sarin, in 1998 he founded the Southern Lord Records label together with Greg Anderson to release the music of their former bands Thorr's Hammer and Burning Witch . In 1999 he founded the experimental Lotus Eaters project with James Plotkin and Aaron Turner . With Davis, O'Malley is in charge of The Ajna Offensive label, which mainly publishes black metal, but also ambient and post-industrial . In addition to mostly apolitical albums, the right-wing extremist band Sigrblot re-released the album Blodsband (Blood Religion Manifest) in 2005 . When asked about Nazism and Burzum, however, he stated that he had "never had an affinity for Vark Vikernes [sic!] Ideology and his racism", but that "his music and everything around him were interesting". And while Black Metal takes itself and its aesthetics very seriously, as a listener it doesn't.

O'Malley's best-known project is the drone-doom band Sunn O))) , in which he appears alongside Greg Anderson as a guitarist and composer. O'Malley also plays improvised rock as the bass player in Trio Nazoranai with Keiji Haino and Oren Ambarchi .
