Earth is an American band and is considered a pioneer of Drone Doom , a Doom sub-genre that is characterized by minimalist, slow and repetitive structures.

history

In 1989 Dylan founded Carlson Earth in Olympia , Washington . Slim Moon (later with Kill Rock Stars ) and Greg Babior (both on guitar) were part of the first line-up. After Carlson decided to move to Seattle , new guitarists got on with Dave Harwell and Joe Preston, with whom the group recorded the debut EP Extra-Capsular Extraction . Kurt Cobain and Kelly Canary (Dickless) participated as singers on the EP. The young band aroused the interest of the record label Sub Pop , which finally released the EP in 1991.

After the EP, Earth initially continued with Carlson and Harwell as a duo, as Joe Preston joined The Melvins . In 1993 Earth 2 , the group's first full album, was released. It is now considered the Drone Doom's first album. After leaving Harwell, Carlsson stood alone one more time. For the third work he therefore hired Tommy Hansen and producer Ian Dickson on guitar and Rick Camben (drums). Although Sub Pop was not satisfied with the progress of the band, the label released their album Phase 3: Thrones and Dominions in 1995 and extended the contract with Earth for another three albums. Ian Dickson became a permanent member, along with Shawn McElligot (guitar) and Mike McDaniels (drums).

In 1997 Pentastar: In The Style Of Demons was released , which is a departure from the minimalist, slow drone-doom sound. With a traditional line-up consisting of guitar, drums and bass, the album contains more alternative rock elements. The group then paused. The 2001 compilation Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars was the official release of a bootleg . The new line-up consisted of Carlson and his girlfriend, drummer Adrienne Davies. Some live performances in the USA and Europe followed. Before the new album was released, several live albums and a remix CD were released, on which Mogwai and Sunn O))) published their interpretations of Earth pieces. In 2005 a live album was released with Living in the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword .

Also in 2005 was Hex; or Printing in the Infernal Method , the first studio album in 9 years. With the album, the band made a drastic musical change towards a less distorted, meditative style that they continued for years to come. In 2006 they shared a split CD with the Earth-influenced band Sunn O))). In 2008 this followed with Hibernaculum , a best-of album that contains rarities, reworkings and new pieces. Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell was a guest on The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull , which was released in 2008, ensuring that word of the band spread to jazz and avant-garde circles. Since director Jim Jarmusch started using the band's music together with other drone pioneers such as Sunn O))) and Boris in his film The Limits of Control in 2009 , the breakthrough into the mainstream seems assured. In 2011 and 2012 the two related parts of the album Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light , were released, in which the cello played a dominant role for the first time .

Music genre

Earth founded the music style Drone Doom , which is mainly characterized by strong distortions and extremely slow riffs that are located in the lower frequency range. Despite their great influence, the group was able to benefit little from its pioneering position and remained an insider tip in the underground for years , while successor bands such as Sunn O))) became much better known. This was mainly due to the long hiatus in the 1990s, as well as the drug addiction of Carlson, the only constant member of the group.

Earth founder Dylan Carlson is also known as a close friend of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain and can be seen in the documentary Kurt & Courtney , for which two compositions by Earth were used.
