The baritone guitar is a construction form of the guitar that is designed for lower vocal ranges due to its extended dimensions (compare the baritone vocal range ).

Designs

While the standard tuning of six-string guitars is EAdgh-e ', there are two tunings for the strings of baritone guitars that can be considered standards: a fourth down on, HEAdf # -h or a fifth down on, ADGcea. This is made possible by the fact that the instruments of this type have a longer scale length compared to other guitars ; their length is between 26.5 and 30 inches (about 70 centimeters on average). In order to ensure the desired stiffness of the tuned strings, thicker strings are used on baritone guitars than on other types of guitars. Since the longer scale length is achieved, among other things, by a slightly elongated instrument neck, baritone guitars are generally longer and often a little heavier. Examples of baritone electric guitars are the models from the US musical instrument manufacturer Fender , Fender Bajo Sexto Telecaster (a variant of the Fender Telecaster ) and Fender Jaguar Baritone Custom , the Gibson Les Paul Studio Baritone from the US musical instrument manufacturer Gibson , the D6 Baritone from the German manufacturer Duesenberg Guitars and the Viking Baritone Deluxe from the Swedish brand Hagström .

Recordings

In 2003 Pat Metheny made groundbreaking recordings on an acoustic baritone guitar for his album "One Quiet Night". He used the guitar tuning ADgcea, whereby the two middle strings were tuned an octave higher (Nashville tuning). The peculiarity of this guitar tuning is the fact that due to the tight tuning of the four highest strings, the voicings played move closer together and thus unusual chords that are unplayable in normal tuning are possible on the guitar. Guitarist Peter Autschbach also uses Nashville tuning on an acoustic baritone guitar for solo pieces and in a duo with Ralf Illenberger .
