Burning Witch was an American sludge band. The band, which only existed from 1995 to 1998, developed cult status after its breakup and is now considered the forerunner of Drone Doom.

Band history

Burning Witch was founded in 1995 by Stephen O'Malley , Greg Anderson and Jamie Sykes after the band Thorr's Hammer broke up . Greg Anderson left the band relatively quickly to play at Goatsnake .

In 1996 the band recorded an EP for the first time, produced by Steve Albini , but the recordings were only released as Towers in 1998 after the band split up . Previously, the EP Rift.Canyon.Dreams was released in 1997 , the only release during its existence.

Burning Witch broke up in 1997 due to their lack of awareness and other member projects, and Stephen O'Malley moved to England. Shortly after the band split up, the compilation Crippled Lucifer , the band's only album, was released. In the fall of 1998 Burning Witch played a few last live shows again.

The band only became known after they broke up, and while it existed they received almost no attention and performed only a few live performances. O'Malley formed the band Sunn O))) together with Anderson , Dahlquist followed Anderson to Goatsnake . Meanwhile, O'Malley is active in various projects, Edgy 59 founded the Sinisstar project and runs the Poisoned Glass project together with Dahlquist .

reception

Allmusic ascribes cult status to the band, as they "explore the most remote corners of negativity and depression" "darker than Doom Metal, creepier than Sludge ."

The Encyclopedia of heavy metal music calls Burning Witch “one of the key bands of the new metal of the eighties [sic!] That took a serious approach to metal as an art form with dark and satanic lyrics and new and innovative styles of drone-based music (similar to the early Velvet Underground or the experiments of the Indian influenced composer Lamonte Young ) ”, Garry Sharpe-Young speaks of it as“ suicide doom ”.
