Xasthur is an American depressive black metal band. The name is derived from the Simon Necronomicon , where Xastur denotes a female demon who kills sleeping men. The only member was Scott "Malefic" Conner, who was already a guest musician for Sunn O))) . He is supported by various session musicians on Xasthur productions . The logo, which was also described as a “hairy tarantula dipped in ink with some smeared runes around it”, was designed by Blood Moon Ausar, who plays in the band Crimson Moon and also supported Xasthur as a keyboardist. Malefic founded Xasthur in 1995 in Alhambra , California .

In 2010, Malefic announced that they would be leaving Xasthur after the last album Portal of Sorrow . On this he took over the drums "rather bumpy" and was supported by Marissa Nadler , according to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer "with astonishingly unelf-like and often magical result".

Xasthur has been active again since 2015. Two other musicians joined Conner with Christopher Hernandez and Rachel Roomian. In 2016 the comeback album Subject to Change was released. Xasthur has been playing Neofolk since it was founded .

music

On the first albums Malefic played a raw and primitive, black-metal- inspired style that was strongly reminiscent of Burzum and evolved into a dark, monotonous and atmospheric direction that is occasionally (like Shining and Strid ) as "DSBM" ( Depressive Suicidal Black Metal ). Malefic plays slurred riffs, his style is described by Robert Müller as "atmospheric, depressive, often obsessively monotonous". In addition to Burzum and Shining, influences included Mütiilation and Les Légions Noires , Graveland's album Thousand Swords , Manes , Forgotten Woods and Funeral Winds .

The texts of Xasthur are appropriately about suicide and depression . The drums are often programmed , but Malefic expanded the instrumentation on Defective Epitaph to include real drums and a cello. Malefic saw in his music the opposite of what " head-banging heavy metal" and life , love and society represent.
