Wolves in the Throne Room ( engl. For, Wolves in the Throne Room '), abbreviated WITTR is an American metal band whose members in a community in Olympia , Washington , to live.

Band history

WITTR was founded in 2002 by the brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver as an amateur project. Rich Corle and Nick Paul later joined, but left the band. The third active member is Will Lindsay, with Ross Sewage being the last to join.

In 2004 and 2005 demo recordings were released and in 2006 the band made their debut with the album Diadem of 12 Stars , followed by Two Hunters in 2007, which earned them their first international attention.

In the conflict between working on the farm and the option of realizing the potential of Wolves in the Throne Room, the band members decided shortly before the release of the album Black Cascade to concentrate intensively on the band for a few years. In 2011 the band announced the end of this period. Celestial Lineage should be their last album for the time being and the accompanying tour their last tour. They will continue to make music together, but neither under this name, nor under the previous musical direction nor the previous focus on music.

In January 2014, however, a new album called Celestite , which is supposed to be based on synthesizer sounds and takes up themes from Celestial Lineage , as well as other projects were announced. On May 7th, the band also announced new concert dates.

music

The songs are mostly overly long and combine elements of Nordic Black Metal with Crustcore , Thrash Metal , Postrock , Shoegazing (the webzine Heathen Harvest, for example, describes the band's style as "blackened shoegazer" ), Folk , Drone Doom and Ambient / Dark Ambient and have thus created an own atmospheric, meditative direction in Black Metal. Bands like Fen (although the band was not supposed to have known a trend to mix Black Metal and Postrock at the time of their founding) or Altar of Plagues (whose album White Tomb thanks Nathan and Aaron Weaver can be found) are considered to be from Wolves in the Throne Room significantly influences or is often compared to the group. The intention was to combine nature's music with Norwegian Black Metal. The music is often compared to the band Weakling , whereby the band does not see itself as Weakling similar or standing in its tradition.

ideology

The band members are not oriented towards satanism . Accordingly, Aaron Weaver negates an assignment to Black Metal . He describes the occasional self-assessment in Black Metal as wrong, but convenient, as it does not correspond to the ideology of the genre.

The musicians have their origins in punk and represent ecological and leftist views. The band members live on a farm, where they strive for a life in harmony with nature and are largely self- sufficient. Drummer Aaron Weaver called the band's farm a fortress :

“A few years ago I decided that there was no future for me in the normal world. I was overwhelmed with grief at the disgust and stupidity that the prevailing culture drives. It seemed necessary to build a fortress in which we can live in a more harmonious and honorable way. "
