Beatriz Merino

Martha Beatriz Merino Lucero (born November 15, 1947 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian politician . In 2003, she was the country's only female prime minister for almost six months .

Beatriz Merino studied in Harvard and London law . She was a Senator from 1990 to 1992 and a Congresswoman from 1995 to 2000. She was Prime Minister from June 23 to December 12, 2003 and was fired by President Alejandro Toledo after rumors emerged that she was a lesbian.

In the course of her professional and political career, Merino has mainly campaigned for women's rights, including in the Council of Women World Leaders , the Business Women's Initiative against HIV / AIDS and as a board member of the International Women's Forum (IMF).

Until 2011, Beatriz Merino worked as a so-called "Ombudsman" ( Defensora del Pueblo ) in Peru, then until the beginning of 2012 as President of the umbrella organization of Peruvian pension funds.
