Dissection ( English dissection ) was a Swedish Metal - band from Strömstad . Her first works were a mixture of black and death metal with varying strong influences of harmony. Just before the breakup, the style shifted entirely to a slow form of Melodic Death Metal . The driving force and only permanent member was Jon Nödtveidt , who broke up the band in 2006 and shot himself shortly afterwards.

history

Dissection was preceded by the thrash metal bands Siren's Yell and Rabbit's Carrot. Both bands were disbanded in 1989; In the fall of 1989 Nödtveidt founded Dissection with ex-Siren's Yell singer Peter Palmdahl, in spring 1990 Ole Öhman, who was involved in both previous bands, joined as drummer.

After the release of the highly acclaimed demo The Grief Prophecy (1990) and the EP Into Infinite Obscurity (1991), Dissection began work on the debut album The Somberlain in 1992 . It was released in 1993 on the No Fashion Records label as a tribute to Mayhem guitarist and scene leader Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth , who was murdered that year by Varg Vikernes (sole member of the band Burzum ).

In November 1994 Dissection signed a contract with the German label Nuclear Blast , which released the widely acclaimed second album Storm of the Light's Bane a year later . In the spring of 1996 a rarity EP called Where Dead Angels Lie was released . As a result of these releases, Dissection gained a reputation as a rousing and intense live band on several tours.

In 1997 Nödtveidt and the rest of the band split up due to internal conflicts. In the same year the band Soulreaper emerged from parts of Dissections , Palmdahl and Norman also played with Runemagick .

In February 1998 Nödtveidt was arrested on suspicion of murder and sentenced in the same year to ten years imprisonment for aiding and abetting the murder of Josef Ben Meddaour, a 38-year-old homosexual Algerian, and illegal possession of weapons; Vlad, a member and head of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order , to which Nödtveidt also belonged , was convicted as the main perpetrator . During his imprisonment, Nödtveidt worked on new dissection titles.

2004 Nödtveidt was on probation discharged and introduced a completely new line-up Dissection on their feet. Their first release was the single Maha Kali , released in the same year , which, however, met with very divided reactions, as it moved in the area of slowed down, melodic death metal with strong heavy metal influences.

In 2005 Haakon Forwald von Disiplin became the band's bassist, but left because of his family situation and in order to be able to concentrate on his esoteric and exoteric work.

The third album Reinkaos was released on April 30, 2006 ( Walpurgis Night ) and confirmed the stylistic change that the single had already hinted at. The response to the album from the press and the public was very controversial. A music video was shot for the song Starless Aeon , during which the band played and sang the song backwards and then played it forwards in sync with the music. The Reinkaos album was a complete failure compared to the earlier works.

On May 23, 2006 Jon Nödtveidt announced the breakup of the band, which was sealed with a European farewell concert on June 24th. Concerts in the USA planned for September 2006 had to be canceled because the US authorities refused Nödtveidt entry due to his past.

On August 18, 2006, the death of Jon Nödtveidt was announced; he had killed himself five days earlier by being shot in the head. His body was found in his apartment and was lying in a circle of candles with a satanic grimoire .

style

The band played traditional death metal on their early demos. On Somberlain the band developed an independent, melodic style for the time. In contrast to most of the bands in the Scandinavian Black Metal scenes of the time, Dissection played technically demanding riffs with numerous tempo variations and used harmonic guitar solos and acoustic breaks.

According to Daniel Ekeroth, the band soon developed “their own melancholic and atmospheric death metal style” which combined “strong melodies with musical brutality”. Dissection saw the "characteristic dual harmony guitar sound" as an important part of their style and therefore needed a second guitarist.

Due to her development towards Melodic Death Metal, Tomas sees "Tompa" Lindberg Dissection as part of the Gothenburg scene. On Reinkao's last studio album , comparisons were often made to bands like In Flames .

Ideological background

Jon Nödtveidt was a staunch anti-cosmic satanist or chaos gnostic and named Dissection several times as the "sonic propaganda unit" of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order (MLO), in which he himself has held a prominent position since 1995. Former Emperor and Thorns drummer Bård "Faust" Eithun , whom Nödtveidt knew from the early 1990s, originally wanted to join Dissection, but left the band immediately due to the satanic concept that Eithun could not stand behind.

Both because of the murder in which Nödtveidt was involved, as well as the views of the MLO, which the latter calls "anti-cosmic Satanism", the band is controversial in the metal scene . Its “elitist view of the world” is “close to social Darwinist ideas”, but the “notion of one's own superiority” is not based on racist or political reasons , but on misanthropic reasons and thus “definitely does not represent strictly right-wing extremist thinking, as is often the case Band is assumed ”. On the contrary, Nödtveidt called racism and nationalism a herd mentality for the mentally weak.
