Upper Saloum is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of ten districts in the Central River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 18,817 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 15,970.
The name is derived from Saloum , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the largest population group is the Wolof with a share of around six-tenths, followed by the Fula and the Mandinka. The distribution in detail: 1.9% Mandinka , 39.2% Fula , 56.5% Wolof , 0.2% Jola , 0.3% Serahule , 0.8% Serer , 0% Aku , 0% Manjago , 0 , 6% Bambara and 0.5% other races.
