Lower Saloum is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of ten districts in the Central River Region .

According to a calculation from 2013 about 12,007 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 13,524.

The name is derived from Saloum , a former small empire.

population

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the largest population group is the Wolof with a share of around five tenths, followed by the Fula and the Mandinka. The distribution in detail: 15.9% Mandinka , 29.1% Fula , 50.3% Wolof , 0.5% Jola , 0.7% Serahule , 0.7% Serer , 0% Aku , 0.5% Manjago , 0.3% Bambara and 1.9% other races.
