Niani (spelling variant: Niani Kuntaur ) is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of ten districts in the Central River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 24,806 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 22,242.
The name is derived from Niani , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 (census at that time), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around three-tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 34.6% Mandinka , 31.5% Fula , 30.5% Wolof , 0.4% Jola , 0.3% Serahule , 0.4% Serer , 0.2% Aku , 0.2 % Manjago , 1% Bambara and 1.1% other ethnic groups.
