Niamina Dankunku is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of ten districts in the Central River Region .

According to a calculation from 2013 about 5571 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 6000.

The name is derived from Niamina - a former small Mandinka empire - and the place Dankunku .

population

According to a survey from 1993 (census at the time), the largest population group is that of the Fula with a share of around six tenths, followed by the Mandinka and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 26.6% Mandinka , 56% Fula , 12% Wolof , 0.3% Jola , 0.9% Serahule , 0.2% Serer , 0.2% Aku , 0.4% Manjago , 0 , 5% Bambara and 3% other ethnic groups.
